NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team fell, 9-5, against the MIT Engineers in game three of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series hosted at Sidell Stadium on Monday where the Engineers earned the 2-1 series win.

The Engineers advance to 17-10-1 overall and 10-7 in conference competition while the Lyons move to 22-10 overall and 12-5 in NEWMAC play.

After a silent three innings, Wheaton jumped to a 2-0 lead in the fourth after senior Joey Santigate doubled to left center for two RBI, bringing home sophomore Tyler Walsh and senior Zach Goodwin-Boyd. MIT quickly responded with runs of their own in the top of the fifth when they talled two two-run doubles off hits from junior Austin Filliere and junior Kyler Kocher, pushing the Engineers ahead, 4-2.

Wheaton came back to tie it in the bottom of the fifth after first-year Nick Raposo doubled to left field to get the inning going. Sophomore Jared Sharkey wasted no time at the plate, crushing a two-run homer to left field to make it 4-4. 

MIT would go on to tally runs in the final three innings of the game, including what would be the game-winning run in the seventh by Filliere off a fielding error. Wheaton registered one more run in the bottom of the ninth off a sacrifice fly by Goodwin-Boyd who brought home Sharkey, but MIT would stop the Lyons there and seal the 9-5 victory.

MIT pitcher Jared Tramontano (3-3) earned the win for the Engineers in his 2.1 innings pitched and striking out three. 

The Lyons will compete in the NEWMAC tournament beginning this weekend. More details to come.
