CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team split its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against the Engineers of MIT Sunday afternoon. Wheaton won game one 5-4, before slipping 6-5 in game two. The two sides will conclude the three game series on Monday. 

GAME ONE: WHEATON 5 – MIT 4
Wheaton captured an early 1-0 lead Josh LaJoie coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Jared Sharkey. LaJoie led off the inning with a single up the middle, before advancing to second on an MIT error and third on a sacrifice bunt from Nick Raposo. 

The two sides traded hits over the next four innings, but it wasn't until the fifth inning that MIT broke through. The Engineers tied the game with a two-out home run to left field, before taking the lead on an RBI single to center by Kyler Kocher. Max Lancaster capped off the scoring for MIT with a two-run home run to left. 

The Engineers helped the Lyons counter in the top of the sixth with four runs coming in to score on two hits and two errors. One of the two hits went to Zach Goodwin-Boyd who homered to right field, picking up Raposo and Sharkey. Tyler Walsh came around to score the final run of the inning and the game later in the inning on a bases loaded walk to Willy Boyd. 

Joe Bongiovanni picked up his third win of the season after coming in to replace Jimmy Gowen in the sixth inning. First-year Paul McGeehan, who also came in to pitch, collected his third save of the season.

GAME TWO: WHEATON 5 - MIT 6
After three scoreless innings, the Engineers broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth, with Austin Filiere and Matt Johnston crossing the plate. 

Wheaton responded with three runs in the top of the fifth, starting with an RBI single to center from LaJoie that scored Walsh. A bases loaded single to center from Raposo knocked in the final two runs of the inning with LaJoie and Joey Santigate coming home.

Jared Schwait tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, before three runs in the seventh handed MIT the lead once again.

Trailing 6-3, Wheaton cut the deficit to one run with Goodwin-Boyd and Walsh coming around to score. Goodwin-Boyd led off the inning by taking a ball to the body, while Walsh reached on a single to left.

The Lyons tried come from behind in the ninth, putting two runners on bases in Sharkey and Goodwin-Boyd, but unfortunately for Wheaton both runners would be left stranded.
