Goodwin-Boyd and Ruocco Homer in 14-2 Win Over Clark

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team held Clark University to just two runs Wednesday evening in the teams 14-2 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over the Cougars.

Senior Mike Bruemmel collected his first win of the season after completing five innings that saw the righty strike out four, while giving up both Cougar runs. Joe Bongiovanni relieved Bruemell and continued for three innings, surrendering just three hits, while striking out five. First-year Paul McGeehan closed out the ninth with two strikeouts.

Wheaton started the scoring in the third inning with a double to left by senior Josh LaJoie that brought in Joey Santigate. Santigate led off the inning with a double to left center. A sacrifice fly by first-year Nick Raposo brought in Chris Ruocco, while was swiftly followed by an RBI single up the middle by Jared Sharkey

The Cougars earned a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but it would be a moot point with Wheaton tacking on four more runs in the fifth. Back-to-back sac flies plated two runs for the Lyons, while a two-run home run from Zach Goodwin-Boyd brought in the final runs of the inning. The home run is Goodwin-Boyd's first of the season and fourth of his career.

Clark picked up its final run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth with Teddy Downing coming around to score.

Wheaton went onto score at least one run in the final four innings of the contest, which included a solo home run to left field by Ruocco in the ninth. The home run is the junior's first of the season and first of his career.

Wheaton returns to action on Thursday, March 30 at Salem State for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
