NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team defeated the Clark Cougars, 8-1, on Wednesday night in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match in the Beard Field House.
The win, which is the Lyons first over the Cougars since the 2011 season, moves them to 4-3 on the overall. Clark slips to 5-9.
The Lyons swept doubles play, starting with an 8-5 win from Will White and Alden Zeff in the No. 2 spot. Shreve Archer and Tyler Butler followed with a commanding 8-2 win over Jimmy Keogh and Mateo Gomez in the No. 3 position.
The final doubles point came from David Gassen and Jeremiah Ryser in the top spot, with the duo defeating the Clark pair 8-6.
Ryser made it a 4-0 contest with the Lyons first singles victory, as the first-year defeated Teodor Nicda-Antonin 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 4 spot. Zeff ended the match in Wheaton's favor with a 6-1, 6-1 win moments later in the No. 5 position.
Gassen picked up a solid a 6-1, 6-3 win in the top spot, taking down Andrey Samodaev.
Trailing 6-0, Clark collected its first and only point from the No. 3 position with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Archer.
The Lyons closed out the match with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win from White in the No. 2 spot and an 8-6 from Jim Beaton in the No. 6 position.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, April 9 at the Coast Guard for a 1 p.m. match.
