10th Inning RBI Single Pushes Lyons Past Clark 2-1

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – A two out RBI single by junior Zachary Goodwin-Boyd in the bottom of the 10th inning pushed the Wheaton College baseball team past visiting Clark College, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Sidell Stadium.

Wheaton improves to 10-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. The Cougars fall to 11-11 overall, while suffering their first conference loss of the year.

Michael Baryski earned the win for Wheaton after pitching two complete innings, which saw the senior lefty strike out two. Brady Furdon started the game for the Lyons, pitching eight innings, striking out four and walking two, while giving up a single run on six hits.

Joshua Dobratz picked up the loss for Clark after 1.2 innings of action, surrendering the game-winning run.

After two and a half scoreless innings, Wheaton threatened in the bottom of the third, managing three hits, but Cougar starting pitcher Patrick Robinson managed to get himself out of the jam.

The Lyons finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Walsh got things going with a one out single to center, before stealing second. The first-year then stole third and came home moments later on a wild pitch.

Tyler Hutchinson evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth with a lead-off homerun off the scoreboard in right field.

Both sides settled into a pitching duel throughout the next three and a half innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the 10th that the Lyons got their offense going. The inning began with a single to center by pinch hitter Ty Calabro. First-year Bobby Pedersen came into run for Calabro and swiftly moved to second on a walk to Ryan McKeon. With the top of the order up for Wheaton, the Cougars managed to retire both Jimmy Smith and Joshua LaJoie.

With two outs and runners at first and second, Goodwin-Boyd stepped up to the plate and began taking hacks at the ball. After fouling off a couple pitches the left fielder managed to find a gap through the right side, giving enough time for Pedersen to come rushing home from second.

Wheaton returns to the field on Thursday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m. as the Lyons host Salem State.
