Wheaton Drops Regular Season Finale To Amherst, 4-1

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team dropped a 4-1 non-conference decision to Amherst College on Thursday evening to conclude its 2014 regular season.

The Lyons (27-14-1) will host MIT on Saturday, May 3 for a pair of games in the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship best-of-three series beginning at noon. If both teams split games on Saturday, Wheaton and MIT will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Sidell Stadium for the NEWMAC title and an automatic berth into the NCAA New England Regional Tournament.

John Cook (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) earned the win on seven innings pitched, six hits, one run (unearned), no walks and a game-high nine strikeouts.

Keenan Szulik (Raleigh, N.C./Cary Academy) notched the save with one walk in the ninth.

Wheaton freshman Jack Fant (Independence, Va./McLean) took the loss on four innings, four hits, three runs (all earned), two walks and four strikeouts.

Freshman Anthony Spina (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkely Carrol) gave Amherst a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run to left field, his second of the season.

Wheaton cut the lead in half in the fourth as sophomore Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) drove in classmate Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) with an RBI ground out to short. Lavanchy reached base via a throwing error, moved up to second on a base hit by junior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) and both runners then advanced an additional 90-feet on a wild pitch to set up the scoring.

Amherst answered in the fifth on a run-producing double to left field by senior Taiki Kasuga (New York, N.Y./Collegiate School) to reclaim its two-run advantage at 3-1.

The Lord Jeffs also tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Amherst (24-7) plays Colby College in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
