Laliberte tosses eight shutout innings as No. 10 Wheaton blanks Springfield 16-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) drove in three runs and junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) went 3-for-5 with two RBI in No. 10 Wheaton College's 16-0 win over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) tossed eight shutout innings for the Lyons (16-3, 8-2 NEWMAC), who posted their largest margin of victory since a 17-0 win over WPI on April 17, 2011. The Lyons pounded out 14 hits and scored in six of the nine innings.

The Lyons took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham). De la Cruz drove in his first run of the afternoon with a sac fly in the fourth before Wheaton scored four times in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Jensen and Ryan each drove in runs to highlight the frame.

Wheaton added one in the seventh, three in the eighth, and sixth in the ninth to pull away from the Pride (10-8, 4-3 NEWMAC). De la Cruz and senior Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) recorded RBI singles in the seventh and eighth, respectively, and freshman Justin Peluso (North Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep) laced a two-run double to highlight the ninth.

Laliberte, meanwhile, scattered seven hits, walked four and struck out one to improve to 2-0 on the season. Jensen, Demeo, and senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H./Salem) each finished with two hits. Demeo scored three runs and Landers, Ryan, and senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) each crossed the plate twice.

Sophomore Eric Chase (Vernon, Conn./Mount Saint Mary) surrendered six hits and six runs in six innings of work for Springfield. He walked three and struck out one to fall to 1-3.

The Lyons and Pride are back at it Wednesday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Sidell Stadium.
