Lyons rip off game's final nine runs in win against Springfield

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team improved to 14-0 when scoring at least six runs while remaining perfect through nine home games on Sunday, as the Lyons ripped off today's final nine runs en route to a 15-4 victory over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Sidell Stadium.

A winner of four straight games and 13 of its last 15, Wheaton, which is receiving national votes in this week's D3baseball.com poll, improved to 17-6 overall and 9-5 in league play.  The Pride is 9-15 and 3-11.

During Wheaton's 16-hit attack, sophomore Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) went 3-for-4 with four runs, while senior Sean Munley (Ewing, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) had a big day, recording four RBI on a pair of hits with two runs.  Sophomore Paul O'Neill (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, senior Eric Laliberte (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) batted 2-for-4 with two runs, while sophomore Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) added a pair of hits.

Senior Tad Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H./Holderness School) plated three runs, and junior Dan Haugh (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) went 1-for-2 with three runs, an RBI and a trio of walks.  Four Wheaton pitchers surrendered just one earned run, with sophomore Frank Holbrook (Middletown, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) improving to 4-0 after allowing eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 5.1 innings.  Three relievers combined to toss 3.2 shutout frames.

Springfield, which finished with six errors, was led by senior John Schmaltz (Cromwell, N.Y./Cromwell) and sophomore Matt Milano (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland), who each had three hits.  Milano also drove in a pair of runs.  Freshman Alex Williams (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, with four hits and four walks in two innings.

Munley delivered the big blow in the first when he sent a bases-clearing double into left center field to give his team a 3-0 edge and a lead that was not relinquished.  Wheaton tacked on its fourth run of the frame on an infield error before leaving the bases loaded.  Springfield rallied with two outs in the second, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to plate a pair of unearned runs.

After Gusovsky singled home Wheaton's fifth run of the game in the home half of the second, the Lyons jammed the bags with two down for the second straight inning, but a liner to right prevented further damage.  The hosts made the score 6-2 with an unearned run in the fifth, as O'Neill singled to lead off the frame before moving to second on a groundout and scoring on an infield error.

Springfield narrowed its deficit to two runs by scoring twice in the sixth, chasing Holbrook, as the Pride used three hits coupled with a Lyon miscue to get within 6-4.  Wheaton responded with three runs on two hits and two Pride errors in the home half.  Jensen got things going with a triple before being plated on Munley's run-scoring single.  The hosts scored their eighth run off an error and their ninth on a sacrifice fly.

Calabro escaped trouble after walking two and allowing a double in the seventh, as no runs came across thanks to Haugh gunning down a runner at the plate and Calabro starting a 1-2-3 double play.  The Lyons blew the game open in the seventh with five runs on five hits and one miscue.

The Lyons will play their third game in as many days tomorrow afternoon when they host non-conference foe Trinity College at 3:30 p.m.
