BRIDGEWATER, MA- Freshman Eric Jensen (Gorham,
NH/Gorham) played a role in two critical rallies for the
Wheaton College baseball team on Tuesday, including driving home
the eventual winning run in the seventh inning of the Lyons' 7-6
victory at Bridgewater State College's Alumni Park. Wheaton, which
is receiving votes in a pair of national polls, won its fifth
straight game in moving to 13-5. The Bears slipped to 10-8.
Jensen, who also scored on junior Tad Skelley's
(Wolfeboro, NH/Holderness School) game-tying two-run
single in the sixth inning, finished 3-for-5. Skelley was 2-for-4
with three RBI, and junior Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson,
NY/Hastings) went 3-for-4.
Sophomore Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint John's
Prep) added two hits, including a home run, while scoring
twice, and freshman Dan Gusovsky (Andover,
MA/Andover) banged out a pair of knocks. Jensen, Gusovsky,
Raad and Skelley - Wheaton's six through nine hitters, respectively
- combined to hit 10-for-18 with five RBI and four runs.
The Blue and White's bullpen strung together eight innings of
three-hit ball, as five hurlers combined to yield one unearned run,
with the first three relievers each freshmen. Justin Dickinson (Stratford, CT/Bunnell) entered in the second
inning to allow two hits in 2.2 frames, Jordan Wylie
(Plymouth, MA/Avon Old Farms School) spun 1.1 no-hit
innings, and Mike McGinnis (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee)
struck out the side during a one-hit sixth.
After McGinnis set down his final two batters, senior
Jon Shepard (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional) and
sophomore David Longley (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick)
combined for three perfect innings, as the final 11 Bear hitters
went down in order. Longley struck out a pair while working the
seventh and eighth, and Shepard came on for his third save.
Freshman Jonathan Surette (Lynn, MA/Lynn
English) took the loss in relief for Bridgewater State,
allowing one run on three hits during 1.1 frames. Junior
Greg Steele (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth
Regional) hit two doubles with two runs and three RBI.
Down 1-0 after the first, the Lyons plated four the following
inning. Haugh led off with a solo homer, Raad and Skelley ripped
two-out RBI singles, and sophomore Hal Landers (Salem,
NH/Salem) doubled in the final run of the frame.
However, Steele's three-run double sparked a four-run home half
before an unearned run came around in the fourth to put the Bears
on top, 6-4. From there, the Wheaton bullpen set down 16 of the
final 17 Bridgewater State hitters, including eight on strikes, and
Skelley's tying hit set up Jensen's seventh-inning go-ahead
knock.
The Lyons return home on Thursday when they face New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University
at 3:30 p.m. After action around the league today, Wheaton is alone
atop the conference standings.
