NEW LONDON, CT- The Wheaton College men's tennis team extended
its winning streak to six matches, equaling the program's longest
since 2007, with a 6-3 victory over the United States Coast Guard
Academy on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) play. At 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the league, the
Lyons dropped the Bears to 5-6 while handing Coast Guard a setback
in its league opener.
Wheaton pulled out a critical 9-8 victory at second doubles,
allowing the Lyons to head into singles with a 2-1 advantage.
Senior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert
Island) and junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro,
MA/Home Schooled) edged out sophomore Nick Martin
(State College, PA) and freshman Blake Maurer
(Fort Worth, TX) at two.
The Wheaton tandem of juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale,
NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford,
CT/Joseph A. Foran) notched an 8-2 victory in the third
slot, while Coast Guard senior Chris Pappe (Kenosha,
WI) and sophomore Greg Mitchell (Keene,
NH) earned an 8-3 triumph in the first position.
The squads traded victories in three-set matches during singles
action, as Lyon senior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge,
MA/Uxbridge) downed Pappe, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 in the third
spot, but Mitchell defeated sophomore Neall Oliver
(Portland, ME/Deering), 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 at one.
Krantz did not yield a game to his fifth-singles foe, Altman
picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at six, while Little notched a 6-2 victory
in the first set over Martin at the second position before edging
the Coast Guard player by a 7-5 count in the second set.
Maurer notched the Bears' other singles triumph, winning 6-1,
6-3 at four.
Wheaton heads to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on
Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. NEWMAC match. The Engineers, who have won
all 11 regular season and tournament league titles in conference
history, are ranked 27th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA).
