NEW LONDON, CT- Making its fifth New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title-match appearance, the
second-seeded Wheaton College men's tennis team was swept by
nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 5-0
during Saturday's final at the United States Coast Guard Academy,
as the Engineers have now won every league championship in the
NEWMAC's 12-year history.
The Lyons finished their successful school year one win shy of
matching a program record, falling to 14-5 while earning their most
victories since the 2004-05 campaign. Wheaton qualified for
its first appearance in a championship match in three years.
MIT, which extended its winning streak to eight matches, raised its
record to 14-1. The Engineers are ranked 26th nationally by
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Lyon juniors Harry Altman
(Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz
(Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) put up the biggest doubles
fight, as the tandem suffered an 8-4 setback in the third
slot. MIT turned in a pair of 8-2 triumphs in the top two
positions to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
The Engineers clinched the title with straight-set victories in
the fourth and sixth spots. During incomplete matches,
sophomore Neall Oliver
(Portland, ME/Deering) posted a 6-1 win in the top slot's
opening set, while seniors James Little (Mount
Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Kyle Hudgins
(Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) were leading their second sets at
two and three, respectively.
