NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College baseball team exploded for 11
runs during the first three innings on Friday en route to a 14-7
non-league win over visiting Keene State College at Sidell
Stadium.
Winners in seven of their last eight games, the Lyons, who are
receiving national votes in this week's D3baseball.com poll, raised
their overall record to 10-5. The Owls fell to 8-7.
Wheaton had six multiple-hit performances on the afternoon, as
the hosts pounded out 16 hits. In the top three positions of
the order, the Blue and White combined to go 7-for-15 with eight
RBI and seven runs. Freshman Sean Ryan (Norton,
MA/Norton) was 2-for-4 with four RBI, three runs and two
doubles, sophomore Hal Landers (Salem, NH/Salem)
went 3-for-6 with three runs, two RBI and three steals, while
senior Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) had two
hits and a pair of RBI.
Junior Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson,
NY/Hastings) batted 3-for-5 while driving in two runs and
scoring twice, senior Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian
Brothers) hit 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and junior
Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of
Princeton) had two hits and two runs.
Freshman Justin Santiago (Bronx,
NY/Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy) picked up the win in
relief, going five innings while yielding two earned runs and four
hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. Freshman
starter Frank Holbrook (Middletown, RI/Portsmouth Abbey
School) left the game with an injury in the fourth, as he
gave up five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.2
frames.
Keene State senior Jeff Raymond (Amston,
CT/RHAM) took the loss after surrendering 10 runs, eight
of which were earned, on eight hits while fanning two batters and
walking two in 2.1 innings. Junior Bobby Doyon
(Keene, NH/Keene) was 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and a
homer, freshman Greg Bates (Salem, NH/Salem) went
3-for-3, while sophomore Cody Callahan (Seekonk,
MA/Seekonk) launched a three-run blast in the fourth.
The Lyons plated a trio of runs in the bottom half of the first,
with Lieneck smacking a two-out, two-run single to make the score
3-0. After Wheaton scored on a passed ball in the second and
added an unearned run for a five-run advantage, the Blue and White
pulled away during its six-run third.
The Lyons scored their six runs on five hits and one Owl
miscue. Landers and Ryan each had two-RBI hits in the frame,
while Raad and sophomore Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint
John's Prep) drove in a run apiece. Keene State
pushed four runs across in the fourth to cut its deficit to 11-5
but came no closer, as the hosts tacked on two runs in the seventh
and an additional one in the eighth.
Wheaton remains at home tomorrow for a New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) twinbill against the United
States Coast Guard Academy at 12:00 p.m.
