BEVERLY/WENHAM, Mass. – First year Matias Umaña (Medellin, Colombia) won four matches to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team at the North Shore Slam Invitational hosted by Endicott College and Gordon College in Beverly, Mass. and Wenham, Mass., respectively.
Umaña won a pair of singles matches in the J Singles Draw in addition to combining with senior Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) to capture two doubles matches in the D Doubles Draw. Umaña won both of his singles matches in straight sets, taking down his first opponent, Gordon first year Isaac Chapa (China Spring, Texas), 6-3, 6-3. Umaña also defeated Gordon first year CJ Clark (South Lyon, Mich.), 6-3, 6-4. He combined with Berteaux to down senior Finn Leeves-Coben (Malibu, Calif.) and sophomore Cleyton Splaine (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine), 6-4. The Wheaton pair also topped the Gordon duo of Chapa and Clark, 6-3. Berteaux was taken to the limit, before dropping his first singles match to Endicott junior Eric Scalici (Essex Fells, N.J.), 6-2, 5-7, 10-8. Berteaux bounced back for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gordon first year Alex Molda (Salisbury, N.H.).
The Lyons were outstanding in doubles play, winning eight of 10 matches.
Senior Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain), first year Pablo Paniagua (Mexico City, Mexico), first year Vaughn Weaver (Honolulu, Hawaii) and senior Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) all posted 3-1 records, including two doubles wins apiece.
Galligo dropped his first singles match to Emerson College first year Alexey Oshchepkov (Moscow, Russia), 5-7, 6-3, 13-11. He bounced back to win his second singles contest in straight frames with a 6-4, 6-4, triumph over Emerson senior Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera, Italy). Galligo and Paniagua paired up for two victories in doubles action. The tandem earned a 6-3 win over Emerson first year Raiden Beall (Fairfax, Va.) and sophomore Tai Finestone (Los Angeles, Calif.), before posting another 6-3 decision against sophomore Santiago Diaz (Orlando, Fla.) and Molda. Paniagua also split his singles matches. He won his first collegiate match with a 7-6 (6), 6-0 effort against Emerson first year Oscar Schewbig (Biot, France), before dropping a 6-2, 6-3 result to Tyler Cranfield of Endicott.
Weaver's first collegiate match ended after three sets. He fell in the opening set, 6-4, to Finestone, before taking the middle frame, 6-2. Finestone came out on top in the third set, 10-4. Weaver defeated Endicott senior Spencer Smith (Albany, N.Y.), 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. He combined with Van Dyke to win both of their doubles matches. The pair powered past the Endicott duo of junior Greg Noroian (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Balthazar Glover (Amherst, N.H.), 6-3. Weaver and Van Dyke also cruised past Leeves-Coben and Splaine, 6-1. Van Dyke battled through three sets in singles play, before falling to Cranfield, 6-2, 6-7, 10-2. Van Dyke capped his singles action with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Schewbig.
First year Luis Adrian Gomez Tinoco (Mexico City, Mexico) and senior Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) teamed for a pair of wins in doubles play. They defeated the Emerson duo of sophomore Santiago Yunes (Miami, Fla.) Schewbig, 6-3, and the Endicott pair of Smith and Johnny Wastcoat, 6-4. Gomez Tinoco's first collegiate singles contest went the distance with three sets. The Wheaton rookie rolled through the first set, 6-1, before Emerson junior Connor Leung (Mercer Island, Wash.) came back with 6-3 and 11-9 wins in the final two sets. Endicott's Jaden Elliot defeated Gomez Tinoco, 6-0, 6-3. Both of Murray's singles matches went three sets. He won the second frame of each match, but dropped the first and third sets of each match. Murray fell to Emerson junior Cameron McAllister (San Diego, Calif.), 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 and was defeated by Endicott sophomore Reece Goodman (Binghamton, N.Y.), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-1.
Junior Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) won the only match he played, taking down Diaz, 6-3, 6-3, in singles play. Munoz and sophomore Landon Wyshner (Winston-Salem, N.C.) were defeated in both of their doubles matches. Nocchi and Leung earned a 6-2 win over the Lyon duo, before Oshchepkov and McAllister came away with a 6-3 triumph. Wyshner dropped both of his singles matches, falling to Elliot, 6-3, 7-5, and Leung, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Sunday, September 20 when it hosts Western New England University at 12:00 p.m.
