NEW LONDON, Conn. — Senior Anika Wagner (Elmore, Vt.) placed second in the hammer throw to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track & field team on the first day of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship at host United States Coast Guard Academy's Nitchman Field in New London, Conn.
The Lyons are currently in second place with 23.5 points, while No. 11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology leads the pack with 96.5 points.
Wagner registered a toss of 47.41 meters to earn the silver for Wheaton.
Senior Jaz Vanderhoof (Portland, Maine) turned in a third-place effort in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:57.23, while sophomore Chloe Vescio (Douglas, Mass.) placed fourth with the fifth-fastest time in program history in the event at 38:59.15 for the Lyons.
Wheaton junior Anella Bolster (Marcellus, N.Y.) finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.31 meters and first year Brooke Xavier (Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia) was 20th with a distance of 4.06 meters.
Senior Michaina Loriston (Boston, Mass.) topped the field in the 100-meter preliminaries with a mark of 12.01 to qualify for tomorrow's finals. Classmate Wendy Wooden (Sharon, Mass.) clocked in at 12.53 to place 12th, while Xavier was 25th with a time of 14.10 for the Lyons.
Sophomore Reilly Hickey (Medford, Mass.) will also return tomorrow to continue competing in the heptathlon. She currently sits in third place for Wheaton with 2188 points after placing second in the 100 meters (15.96) and third in both the 200 meters (27.63) and high jump (1.34 meters). She also finished seventh in the shot put with a mark of 7.39 meters.
First year Molly Gleason (Marstons Mills, Mass.) finished ninth in the javelin throw with a heave of 28.68 meters for the Lyons.
Wheaton returns to the track tomorrow in New London for the final day of the NEWMAC Championship.
