MEDFORD/WESTFIELD, Mass. — First year Josy Wright (Sharon, Mass.) broke the school record and placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at the Tufts Spring Invitational today in Medford, Mass. at Dussault Track & Field complex within the Frederick M. Ellis Oval.
Wright posted a time of 54.15 to shatter the previous record of 54.52, set by Ben Sharma '15 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship on May 15, 2014.
The Lyons also saw a number of outstanding efforts from the throwers, who competed at the Jerry Gravel Classic in Westfield, Mass. Junior Logan Quinn (Portsmouth, R.I.) placed second with the second-best throw in school history in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.57 meters. Senior Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) also climbed higher into Wheaton's all-time best list with a mark of 38.79 to finish fourth in the discus throw with a distance that stands third at Wheaton. Copp also finished third in the shot put with a mark of 12.57 meters. First year Nick Barbee (Manchester, N.H.) enjoyed a tremendous day with three Wheaton top-10 marks. He finished fifth in the discus throw with a toss of 37.08 meters to rank sixth for the Lyons. His throw of 31.72 meters places 10th all-time at Wheaton and was good for ninth in the hammer throw. Barbee placed 10th in the shot put with a heave of 11.05 meters to place him 10th in school annals. Sophomore Kieran Templeton (Glens Falls, N.Y.) finished eighth in the hammer throw with a mark of 35.12, which was also good for ninth in school history. He finished 11th in the shot put with a heave of 10.38 meters, while Quinn was 12th with a throw of 10.29 meters. Barbee was 14th in the discus throw with a mark of 30.60 meters. Junior Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) turned in a distance of 10.28 meters at the meet in Medford to finish 26th in the meet.
The Lyons placed third in the 4X400-meter relay with a time of 3:23.67 behind sophomore Harrison Page (South Berwick, Maine), sophomore Aidan Greenleaf (Topsham, Maine), Smith and first year Nolan Bushnell (Rochester, Mass.). Wheaton's 4X100-meter relay experienced success as well. First year Tyler Lamonde (Swansea, Mass.), Greenleaf, senior GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) and first year David Kadiri (Dracut, Mass.).
Sophomore Gavin Landry (Sebago, Maine) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.07, while sophomore Joshua Wright (Gorham, Maine) was 13th with a time of 16.83., first year Liam Reagan (Scarborough, Maine) was 17th in the event with a mark of 17.87. Wright also finished 17th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.76. Reagan was the 18th-place finisher in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.87 and junior Andrew Fortin (South Dartmouth, Mass.) was 20th in the 400-meter hurdles on a time of 1:00.45.
Kadiri finished 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 22.45. Lamonde was 17th in the event with a clip of 22.58. Senior Parker Fullem (Wantage, N.J.) turned in a time of 55.32 to finish 25th in the 400 meters and senior Dante Marciano (Bristol, Conn.) finished 29th with a time of 56.01. First year Jack Kittredge (Broad Brook, Conn.) finished 31st to lead the Lyons in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:05.66. Mualis recorded a time of 11.57 to finish 37th in the 100 meters.
Wheaton returns to action on Friday, April 17 when it competes at the BSU Bears Invitational in Bridgewater, Mass.
