Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team allowed Transylvania University a single win in the doubles and a single win in the singles as the Lyons defeated the Pioneers down in Florida on Monday morning.
The Lyons improve to 4-2 with the win, while the Pioneers fall to 3-3 on the season with the loss.
Sophomore
Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) and junior
Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) made quick work of the Pioneers pairing in second doubles, senior Jordan Cordrey (Prospect, Ky.) and Luke Earlywine (Paris, Ky.), as the Lyons won 6-1. Juniors
Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and
Calvin Van Dyke (Albuqurque, N.M.) also won 6-1 from third doubles over senior Max Deckop (Pataskala, Ohio) and sophomore Tobias Mandeville (Gallatin, Tenn.).Â
The Pioneers took the first singles point, but Munoz fought back from a first set loss to win in the second singles. First year
Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) won from straight-sets in the third singles over Jacob Jiranek (Elizabethtown, Ky.), downing the junior 6-3, 6-2. Berteaux won after his opponent retired in the second set from fourth singles, and Murray took down Earlywine in straight-sets, 6-3, 7-5.Â
Junior
Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) had the most impressive showing of the day, shutting out his opponent 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the 6-1 victory for Wheaton.Â
Wheaton will resume play on Wednesday when they take on Hampden-Sydney College at 7:00 pm in Orlando, Florida. Transylvania will take on Hamline University tomorrow morning at 8:00 am, also in Orlando.Â
