POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) placed 26th in the foil at the NCAA Northeast Regional Women's Fencing Championships hosted by Vassar College at Walker Field House in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Vaughan's finish was the highest in school history at the Regional Championships.
Vaughan won two of four bouts in the opening round to earn a spot in the second round of the regional foil competition. She blanked Hunter College senior Giselle Carino (Queens, N.Y.), 5-0, while also taking down New York University senior Emily Luo (Shanghai, China), by a count of 5-3. Vaughan was nipped by Massachusetts Institute of Technology junior Amber Peng (Irvine, Calif.), 5-4, and was defeated by Brandeis University senior Hannah Du (Winchester, Mass.), 5-2.
The Wheaton second-year fencer avenged her loss to Peng in the second round with a resounding 5-2 triumph. She also dismantled Brown University first year Vera Fung (Saratoga, Calif.), 5-4. Vaughan suffered a pair of 5-2 losses to Boston College junior Cameron Cho (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and to Cornell University first year Lana Lee (Seoul, South Korea). Yale University junior Kristina Petrova (Los Altos, Calif.) managed a 5-1 win over Vaughan and Columbia University senior Zander Rhodes (South Orange, N.J.) kept Vaughan off the board in a 5-0 triumph. Despite her two victories, Vaughan was not able to advance to the next round.
