EVANSTON, Ill. — Sophomore Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) recorded an 8-3 individual record for the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team on Day Two of the Schiller Duals hosted by Northwestern University at Patten Gymnasium in Evanston, Ill.
The Lyons were winless in four matches on the day and are now 0-23.
Vaughan won at least two bouts in three of the four matches and finished the weekend with a sterling 19-7 record.
She began the day with three wins in as many bouts for Wheaton in foil against The Ohio State University tio provide all points in a 24-3 loss. She defeated junior Raiyan Moradi-Bidhendi (San Diego, Calif.), 5-2. Vaughan nipped sophomore Masha Cojocari (Chisinau, Moldova), 5-4, before taking down first year Lira Cannon (Denver, Colo.), 5-1.
The Lyons received two points in both foil and epee in a 23-4 loss to Denison University. Vaughan blanked senior Bella Musto (North Andover, Mass.), 5-0, and picked up a 5-4 decision over junior Lal Ertun (Istanbul, Turkey) in foil. Sophomore Valerie Oginsky (Princeton, N.J.) finished a point short of winning all three of her bouts in epee. She defeated senior Grace Lukens (Wadsworth, Ohio), 5-3 and posted a 5-4 victory over first year Tessa Randleman (Ridgewood, N.J.). Her only setback was a 5-4 loss to sophomore Claire Anderson (Englewood, Colo.).
Wheaton dropped a 17-2 match to Cleveland State University. Vaughan blanked sophomore Evelyn Malvestuto (Homewood, Ill.), 5-0 and the Lyons picked up another point due to a forfeit at foil.
Vaughan earned two of Wheaton's three wins in an 18-3 loss to Wayne State University. She dropped just one point in her first two bouts combined. Vaughan dispatched of first year Shriya Bangalore (Frisco, Texas), 5-1, and followed the conquest with a 5-0 shutout over senior Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich.). Oginsky earned her third win of the day with a 5-2 triumph over graduate student Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich.).
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, February 28 when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to compete in Northeast Fencing competition at Boston College.
