Women's Fencing Competes at Northeast Fencing Conference Competition

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team spent Saturday competing engaged in Northeast Fencing Conference competition at host Boston College. The field of competition was as deep as it was wide, with the Lyons taking on the hosting Eagles, Vassar, Brandeis, MIT, Brown and Sacred Heart.

Sophomores Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) and Valerie Oginsky (Princeton, N.J.) both drew a point from the Eagles, but would ultimately fall to the hosts 23-2. Vaughan earned a victory in her second bout with the foil, and Oginsky won her final bout against the Eagles with the epee.

Vaughan returned to form against Vassar, dominating the New York-based side with a 3-0 sweep. The sophomore stunned the competition, winning her bouts 5-1, 5-0 and 5-1. Oginsky did not fare as well, falling to Vassar 0-3. The Lyons dropped the round 22-3.

Brandeis took a victory from Vaughan in their first bout, but Oginsky picked up the point with the epee by winning her first bout against the Judges. Despite the strong start, the Lyons fell 22-3.

Vaughan would go 2-1 against MIT to earn Wheaton's only points in the 23-2 loss. Brown would shut out the Lyons despite the two fencers' best efforts, taking the round 25-0. Vaughan fought valiantly in her three bouts, coming as close to the Brown Bears as 5-3.

Vaughan closed out her day with a clean sweep over Sacred Heart, winning all three of her bouts with ease (5-0, 5-2, 5-0). Oginsky also picked up a point, winning her second bout 5-3. The Lyons lost 23-4 to wrap up the day.

Vaughan finished her time in the competition with an 11-7 record, while Oginsky closed the day with three bout victories.
