Box Score LEWISTON, Maine - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team played their second-straight game in the northern reaches of Maine as they fell to No. 20 Bates College 17-6 on Sunday afternoon in Lewiston.
Wheaton suffers their first loss of the season to fall to 5-1 on the year. The Bobcats, which are ranked in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association national poll, stay undefeated and improve to 6-0.
Lyons seniors
Emmett Edwards (Sunderland, Vt.) and
Charlie Goodrich (Fairfield, Conn.) both scored twice, with the latter adding four ground balls. Juniors
Theo Stamatel (Plainville, Mass.) and
Lucas Mehlhorn (South Portland, Maine) were the only other goalscorers for Wheaton. Junior
Evan Borchert (Littleton, Colo.) played half the game for the Lyons, making 13 saves in 30 minutes. First years
Silas Vega (East Brunswick, N.J.) and
Cole Wilson (Barrington, R.I.) split the second half, with the former making four saves and the latter stopping one.
Bates boasted deep wells of offense to pull goals from as demonstrated by their eleven unique goalscorers in the contest. Junior Gray Doyle (Summit, N.J.) finished the day with six points including three goals and as many assists to lead the Bobcats. Senior Liam Rule (Seattle, Wash.) also netted a hat-trick, while junior Riley McClure (Georgetown, Mass.) and sophomore Jack Goldbach (West Caldwell, N.J.) both scored twice. Seven other Bobcats scored once.
Wheaton was hemmed into their own end after the opening face off, and the Bobcats' pressure did not relinquish in the first quarter. They stacked seven goals on the Lyons, while Wheaton managed just a single shot on goal in the frame. Wheaton was moving the ball well, succeeding on all four of their clearance attempts, but the Bobcats defense was suffocating the Lyons' attackers.
The Lyons scored with 4:51 to go in the second quarter after going man-up, but by then Bates had scored 11 goals. Sophomore
Zac DiLauri (Parisppany, N.J.) picked up the assist on Goodrich's goal, but the Bobcats were able to add one more goal before halftime thanks to Rule.
The Lyons reset during the break, and entered the second half refreshed and energized. Mehlhorn ripped an unassisted goal to kick off the scoring, and had his effort followed up by Stamatel just over a minute later. Rule was able to kick-start the Bobcat offense with a goal, but the Lyons were able to clear their lines to maintain possession after the Bates score. Stamatel found Goodrich for his second of the game, and Stamatel earned another assist on Edwards' goal with two minutes to go. Doyle found the back of the net with a minute left in the third, putting his side ahead 14-5, but the Lyons outscored the Bobcats 4-2 in the third quarter.
Bates scored twice to start the fourth quarter, but Edwards was able to score again for Wheaton's second man-up goal. Junior
Will Durkee (Oakland, Maine) earned the assist on the last Lyons goal of the game. Bates bounced one last goal home themselves, and the game ended in the Bobcats' favor at 17-6.
Wheaton will return to Nordin Field in Norton, Mass. on Wednesday at 7:00 pm as the Lyons host Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Bates will return to play in the NESCAC as they head out to Amherst College for a game with the Mammoths on Saturday at noon.
