First year Declan Mulkerin (Northborough, Mass.), junior Stephen Fogarty (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Preston Briggs (Wells, Maine) each added a goal with Briggs tacking on an assist for a two-point day. First year goalkeeper Eli Allaire (North Berwick, Maine) had a busy day in the crease, making 21 saves over 57 minutes.Â
Despite the cool tones of the azure playing surface, the Lyons showed up to Blue Bolt Field red hot. DiLauri would strike first after Bodnaruk won the opening faceoff, scoring just over two minutes into the contest. The initial advantage was wiped away after Mulkerin scored his only goal of the game three minutes later. Wheaton had their next three attempts on target denied by Allaire, and the hosts would score again to take the lead with three minutes to go in the quarter. Stamatel clutched up in the Lyons' last possession, slipping the ball past Allaire to tie the game at 2-2 with 13 seconds on the clock.Â
Both sides emerged with an increased rhythm in the second quarter, but the defenses held fast on both ends. Borchert was called into action twice in the frame as his defenders did a great job at keeping the pressure away from the front of the cage. The Nor'Easters managed to break the dam with 61 seconds until halftime as Shea Fogarty scored his second of the game, giving his side a 3-2 lead at the break.Â
The other Fogarty scored again right out of the intermission, doubling the host''s lead. Stamatel answered back just over a minute later, bringing Wheaton back within one. DiLauri found the back of the net on their next possession, tying the score at 4-4. Borchert came up huge as the third quarter wound down, making seven saves to keep the Lyons level.Â
The fourth quarter started after the two minute break, and Wheaton came roaring out the gates. Stamatel scorched a shot past Allaire just 39 seconds into the frame, giving Wheaton their first lead since the first quarter. Noyes made it a two-goal lead minutes later, carrying the ball around the back of the goal and burying it into the top-right corner. Briggs would bring the hosts back within one with eight minutes to play, but the Lyons defense held strong to secure the road win.Â
Wheaton will stay in Maine for their next game as they take on Bates College on Sunday at 1:00 pm. University of New England will take the day off tomorrow before resuming play on Saturday against Keene State in Biddeford at 12:00 pm.Â
