NORTON, Mass. — Senior Jaz Vanderhoof (Portland, Maine) broke the school record to finish first in the 3000 meters and classmate Michaina Loriston (Boston, Mass.) earned wins in the 60 meters and the 200 meters to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track & field team today at the Wheaton Invitational at Beard Field House in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons tallied 156 points to top the field, followed by Springfield College with 116 points.
Vanderhoof's time of 10:15.39 supplanted the previous Wheaton standard of 10:16.65 set by Meagan Brousseau during the 2006 campaign. Loriston posted a winning time of 7.72 in the 60 meters and clocked in at 25.97 to best the field in the 200 meters.
Sophomore Chloe Vescio (Douglas, Mass.) placed second behind Vanderhoof in the 3000 meters with a personal-record mark of 10:42.65, which was also good for the eighth-fastest time in program history for the Lyons. Senior Wendy Wooden (Sharon, Mass.) placed fifth in the 60 meters with a clip of 8.00, while finishing sixth in the 200 meters with a mark of 27.52.
Wheaton junior Anella Bolster (Marcellus, N.Y.), first year Carly Satterfield (Bowdoinham, Maine), senior Anika Wagner (Elmore, Vt.) and the 4X400-meter relay squad all recorded victories for the Lyons. Bolster posted a personal-record leap of 5.21 meters in the long jump and Satterfield notched a personal-record height and the sixth-best distance in school annals of 2.85 meters to win the pole vault. In addition, the first year placed third in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 11.91, which was also good for the seventh-best heave in school history. Wagner captured a win in the weight throw at 15.05 meters.
Senior Kristen DiBella (Boston, Mass.) and juniors Jessie Dickson (Southbury, Conn.), Camille Connors (Woburn, Mass.) and Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.) combined to post a winning time of 4:11.40 in the 4X400 relay in the final women's event for the Lyons
First year Adeline Takantjas (Belmont, N.H.) placed among the top eight in three different events for Wheaton, including third in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best effort of 9.70, before finishing eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.33 meters. She also added a fourth-place showing in the triple jump with a distance of 9.66 meters. Sophomore Reilly Hickey (Medford, Mass.) placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.73 and finished ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.33 meters. Junior Christina Lang (Coventry, R.I.) and first year Karina Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I.) also placed in the event for the Lyons. Lang registered a distance of 4.68 meters to finish fifth and Contreras was seventh with a leap of 4.60 meters.
DiBella posted a personal-record time of 1:02.03 to finish second in the 400 meters, while sophomore Abby Wozniak (Blackstone, Mass.) was the runner-up in the 1000 meters with a personal-record mark of 3:14.18. Junior Lauren Hinckley Niantic, Conn.) registered a leap of 10.35 meters to finish second in the triple jump. Connors turned in a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 26.76, ahead of first year Paige Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who clocked in at 27.55 to place seventh in the event.
Senior Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) recorded a personal-best time of 9.79 in the 60-meter hurdles in the preliminaries, before placing sixth in the event finals for the Lyons. She also posted a mark of 26.92 in the 200 meters in the open event to eclipse a number of collegiate times in the meet.
Wheaton returns to action on Friday, February 13 when it competes at both the Crimson Open at host Harvard University and the Cupid Challenge, hosted by Tufts University.
