Vaughan Shines at Schiller Duals for Women's Fencing

EVANSTON, Ill. — Sophomore Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) posted an 11-4 record in five matches to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team on the first day of the Schiller Duals hosted by Northwestern University at Patten Gymnasium in Evanston, Ill.

The Lyons dropped all five matches for the day to fall to 0-19 on the season.

Wheaton was defeated by United States Air Force Academy, 23-1, before dropping a 23-4 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson University. The Lyons were upended by Lawrence University and Northwestern University by identical scores of 25-2 and closed out the day with a 23-4 loss to University of Detroit Mercy.

Vaughan won the majority of her bouts in four of five matches. She defeated Air Force first year Isabella Sun (Roseland,  N.J.), 5-2. It was her only match of the day with just one win. Vaughan rebounded to sweep all of her foil bouts against Fairleigh Dickinson, blanking first year Genesis Pena, 5-0, before nipping first year Samaria Sabal (Rockaway, N.Y.) and first year Sára Szeverényi (Budapest, Hungary) by scores of 5-4. Wheaton sophomore Valerie Oginsky (Princeton, N.J.) also picked up a win in the match, routing junior Sherleen Yunes (Teaneck, N.J.), 5-0 in epee.

Vaughan rebounded from a 5-4 loss to first year Mathilda Reiff (Denver, Colo.) from Lawrence to gain a pair of victories. She defeated sophomore Hannah Bugeja (Gulfview Heights, Australia), 5-2, and followed that effort with a 5-2 win over senior Sophia Kelley (Circle Pines, Minn.).

Vaughan picked up two points in the foil against Northwestern as well. She earned a 5-3 win over senior Allison Lee (Kinnelon, N.J.) and took down senior Samantha Serban (Chatham, N.J.), 5-2. Her only defeat was a 5-4 setback to junior Karina Vasile (Bucharest, Romania). Oginsky was extremely competitive in epee against Northwestern, dropping all three of her bouts by a score of 5-4.

Vaughan closed out the day by sweeping through all three foil opponents from Detroit Mercy. She dominated junior Riya Panicker (Macomb, Mich.), 5-0, before defeating junior Sydney Upton (Troy, Mich.), 5-2. Her final bout was a 5-4 win over senior Shana Dupin (Ploemeur, France). Oginsky picked up a win in the epee with a 5-4 showing against junior Sophia Miller (Troy, Mich.).

Wheaton returns to the strip tomorrow when it takes on The Ohio State University at 11:20 a.m. EST.
