Men's Tennis Competes at North Shore Slam Invitational

BEVERLY/WENHAM, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team competed on the first day of the North Shore Slam Invitational, co-hosted by Endicott College and Gordon College in Beverly, Mass. and Wenham, Mass., respectively.

Lyon first year Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) picked up a pair of wins in the Green Singles bracket to advance to tomorrow's bracket championship on the Gordon campus. Wyshner cruised past Endicott sophomore Greg Noroian (Worcester, Mass.), dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in his first collegiate match. Wyshner needed three sets to defeat Gordon senior Gabriel Guzman (Huila, Colombia). Guzman took the first frame, 6-2, before Wyshner exacted revenge with a 6-3 effort and outlasted his Gordon foe, 10-8, in the third set to advance to the bracket final. Wyshner will play Endicott sophomore Eric Scalici (Essex Fells, N.J.).

Wheaton junior Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) won his opening match in the Green bracket in three frames. He dropped the opening set to Endicott sophomore Ethan Hopman (Summit, N.J.), 6-4, before bouncing back to claim the middle set, 6-2, and the deciding frame, 10-5. He battled Scalici to a three-set defeat. Van Dyke won the first frame, 6-4, but Scalici evened the match with a 7-5 win in the second, before taking the third frame, 10-5. Van Dyke will take on Guzman in the winner bracket's consolation final.

Van Dyke also teamed with classmate Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) to win their opening match in the Blue Doubles bracket on the Gordon campus. The pair defeated Scalici and Endicott first year Drew Benporath (South Guilford, Wash.), 8-4. The Wheaton duo will take on Emerson College junior Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera, Italy) and first year Adam Alireza (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) in tomorrow's semifinal match at Gordon.

Junior Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) dropped his opening match in the Blue Singles bracket for the Lyons to Gordon senior Jeffrey Bodner (Moncton, N.B.) in three sets. Galligo won the first frame, 6-4, before Bodner rebounded for a 6-4, 10-6 result in the next two sets. Galligo took Emerson sophomore Connor Leung (Mercer Island, Wash.) in two sets, 6-2, 6-4, in the consolation bracket semifinals. Galligo will return to Gordon's campus to take on Benporath in tomorrow's consolation final.

Wheaton junior Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) was defeated in both of his singles matches on the day in the White bracket on the Endicott campus. He suffered a tough 7-6 (5), 7-5 loss to Emerson first year Tai Finestone (Los Angeles, Calif.). Thain battled in a three-set loss in the consolation bracket semifinals to Gordon sophomore Percy Martinez (Coral Gables, Fla.). Thain won the opening frame, 7-5, but Martinez had little trouble in the second frame, 6-1, before taking the match with a 10-5 third-set decision. Thain will play Endicott senior James Zeolie (Amherst, N.H.) in a consolation consolation match tomorrow in Beverly.

First year David Anghinetti (Rehoboth, Mass.) was defeated in both his singles matches in the Yellow bracket on the Endicott campus for the Lyons. Cleyton Splaine battled to a 7-6 (5) opening set win, before taking the next frame, 6-3. Anghinetti met Gordon first year Jack Makiej (Andover, Mass.) in the consolation semifinal, but fell, 6-1, 6-2.

Galligo and Wyshner teamed in the Blue Doubles bracket, but were defeated by Leung and Finestone, 8-6. The Lyon tandem will play in tomorrow's consolation semifinals against Bodner and Gordon first year Santiago Diaz (Orlando, Fla.). Thain and Anghinetti dropped their first round doubles match in the White bracket for Wheaton to Noroian and Hopman, 8-4, but received a bye into tomorrow's consolation bracket final at the Endicott campus.

The Lyons will return to the courts tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
