McLaughlin Named NEWMAC Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse player Mike McLaughlin (Stoughton, Mass.) was named the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week for the week of April 14-20, it was announced today by the NEWMAC.

The honor marks the fourth time this season that a Lyon has earned a conference weekly award. McLaughlin joins junior attackman Emmett Edwards (Sunderland, Vt.) to mark the first time since the 2015 campaign that Wheaton has earned the Offensive accolade multiple times in a season when Will Morrison '17 was chosen twice. Senior goalie Connor Almstrom (Cumberland, R.I.) was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week for the weeks of March 3-9 and February 23 to March 2 this season as well.

McLaughlin tallied eight points on three goals and five assists to go with seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in two matches for the Lyons. The midfielder began the week with three goals and a career-high matching four assists to give him seven points in addition to three ground balls and a caused turnover against visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy on April 15. The senior capped the week with an assist, four ground balls and a caused turnover at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on April 19.

For the season, the Stoughton High School graduate ranks second on the team with 22 goals, while standing third with 37 points, 15 assists and a career-high 11 caused turnovers. He's made a pair of starts in 14 matches this season and has picked up 24 ground balls. McLaughlin has been one of the most consistent point and goal scorers for Wheaton as the only player on the squad with at least one point in every game, while notching at least one goal in 12 of 14 contests, including a string of 12 straight matches. The middie also recorded multiple points on 10 occasions and notched his 100th career point after scoring a fourth-quarter goal at Rivier University on February 26.

McLaughlin currently has 131 career points, including 74 goals in 62 games and ranks seventh in program history with 57 assists. In addition, he has 84 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers during his tenure in Norton.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 26 when they host NEWMAC rival Springfield College on Nordin Field for Senior Day at 1:00 p.m.
