Vaughan Goes 8-1 on Final Day of Schiller Duals to Lead Women's Fencing

EVANSTON, Ill. – Wheaton College (Mass.) first year Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) dominated on Day Two of the Schiller Duals hosted by Northwestern University to lead the women's fencing team today at Patten Gymnasium in Evanston, Ill.

The Lyons were defeated in dual match play by both Lawrence University and Cleveland State University by a count of 24-3, while falling to Wayne State University, 20-2.

Vaughan began the day by sweeping her foil bouts against Lawrence, going 3-0. She edged junior Iris Pierce (Austin, Texas), 5-4, before cruising past both junior Sophia Kelley (Circle Pines, Minn.) and first year Hannah Bugeia (Gulfview Heights, Australia) by scores of 5-1 each. Wheaton first year Valerie Oginsky (Montgomery, N.J.) took junior Nora Anderson (Saint Paul, Minn.) to the limit in epee, but was nipped, 5-4. Oginsky suffered identical 5-3 defeats to both junior Sophia Lewis (Fairborn, Ohio) and senior Eleanor Seelaus (Denver, Colo.).

Vaughan continued her formidable efforts, dropping just one point in three foil bouts to Cleveland State. She defeated junior Maia Taylor Casamayor (Pittsford, N.Y.) 5-1, before blanking both first years Evelyn Malvestuto (Homewood, Ill.) and Anna Quinn (Corvallis, Ore.), 5-0. Oginsky completed the match with CSU with a 5-3 loss in epee to first year Maggie Mihill (Marietta, Ga.). She was shut out by both sophomore Rayllen Prafil Capaccio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Casamayor, 5-0.

Vaughan ran her win streak to seven straight for the day after taking down Wayne State sophomore Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich.), 5-2, but suffered her only loss of the day to junior Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy), 5-3. Vaughan rebounded to claim a forfeit win to finish the day. Oginsky was downed by Salme Tavek, 5-3, in her first bout against Wayne State. She was defeated by sophomore Reka Galfalvy, 5-0, and suffered a 5-2 loss to graduate student Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.).

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, February 22 when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to compete in an invitational hosted by the United States Military Academy Club Fencing team.
