Women's Fencing Battles on Day One of Drew Invitational

MADISON, N.J. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team kicked off its 2025 season with a long day of competition at the Drew Invitational on the campus of Drew University in the Simon Forum and Athletic Center throughout Saturday in Madison, N.J.

Sophomores Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) and Valerie Oginsky (Princeton, N.J.) represented the Lyons well, as Vaughan finished the day with an 11-4 record and Oginsky finished at 4-8.

Vaughan was the lone fencer to take on Drew to start the morning, winning her first bout with ease before blowing away the competition in the second round with a 5-1 win and a 5-2 win.

Cornell proved to be a bit more of a challenge for the sophomore fencer, as she took her first round bout narrowly, 5-4. She pushed ahead to take her second round bout 5-3, but dropped the third round bout by a score of 5-3 to senior Mia Jo (Pales Verdes Estates, Calif.).

Their third match of the day against Haverford College featured both fencers. Vaughan swept the foil for the second time on the day. Oginsky dropped her first round bout but roared back to life in the second round with a 5-3 win over junior Olivia Rueger (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.). Oginsky won again in the third round, taking the bout 5-1.

Wheaton mustered only one point against Denison University, with Vaughan taking her second round bout 5-1 before dropping in the third round. The Lyons' final match of the day against New Jersey Institute of Technology saw both fencers pick up a pair of wins. Vaughan won her first two bouts 5-0, but was bested in the third by a score of 5-1. Oginsky split her first two bouts in the epee before she claimed victory in her last bout of the day by default.

Wheaton remains in the Garden State in New Jersey to compete on day two of the Drew Invitational tomorrow. The Lyons take on Johns Hopkins University at the start of the day, before taking on Stevens Institute of Technology, Wellesley College, Lafayette College and Long Island University - Brooklyn.
