MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track & field team's 4X100-meter relay placed second to lead the Lyons at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Doug E. Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The time of 47.49 ranks as the fastest mark in NCAA Division III this season. Wheaton's quartet of first year Savanna Vargas (Peabody, Mass.), senior Schyler Wyse (East Granby, Conn.), sophomore Wendy Wooden (Sharon, Mass.) and sophomore Michaina Loriston (Boston, Mass.) finished as the runner-up to Division I Coastal Carolina University's contingent of junior Amanda Kinloch (North Miami, Fla.), junior Camryn Lorick (Fort Mill, S.C.), senior Amelia Canetto (Hillsdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Zionna Perez-Tucker (Rotterdam, N.Y.), which posted a mark of 45.41.
The Lyons also placed 15th in the race with their second 4X100 relay squad of junior Emily Zielinski (Orange, Conn.), sophomore Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.), first year Camille Connors (Woburn, Mass.) and first year Lauren Hinckley (Niantic, Conn.) posting a time of 50.95.
Wyse also placed ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.35, while Vargas was 24th with a personal-record time of 25.92. Loriston finished 29th in the race with a personal-best mark of 26.09.
Sophomore Kristen DiBella (Boston, Mass.) finished 11th in the 400-meter hurdles for Wheaton with a personal-record effort of 1:09.59, while first year Jessie Dickson (Southbury, Conn.) clocked in at 1:01.20 to place 21st in the 400 meters and classmate Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.) was 30th in the race with a mark of 1:03.30.
Junior Tianna Rogers (Danbury, Conn.) led the Lyons' field athletes, placing 15th in the shot put with a heave of 11.12 meters, while sophomore Anika Wagner (Stowe, Vt.) finished 17th with a personal-record toss of 10.87 meters. Senior Lily McDowell (Yarmouth, Maine) registered a throw of 31.58 meters in the discus to finish 30th, while Wagner placed 47th with a throw of 25.17 meters.
Hinckley finished 20th in the triple jump for Wheaton with a leap of 10.60 meters and senior Taima Ronish (Lancaster, N.H.) recorded a distance of 10.14 meters to finish 23rd.
The Lyons return to action on Friday, March 29 for the two-day Black and Gold Invitational, hosted by Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.
