STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team recorded its highest point total of its inaugural season in a 13-5 loss to Hunter College this morning at the Wagner Invitational hosted by Wagner College at the Spiro Athletic Center in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Lyons slip to 0-18 on the season.
First year Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) won all three of her bouts in foil for Wheaton. She was undefeated on the day with a 6-0 mark after winning three straight bouts against host Wagner earlier in the day.
Vaughan began her dominance with a 5-2 win over junior Maya Nair (Tappan, N.Y.) and followed with a 5-3 effort over junior Giselle Carino (Queens, N.Y.). She toppled sophomore Brean Tobin (Cornwall, N.Y.), 5-2, in her final bout of the day.
First year Valerie Oginsky (Montgomery, N.J.) won two of her three bouts at epee for the Lyons. She was taken down by first year Elizabeth Wassif (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in her opening round bout, 5-2, but bounced back to win her last two remaining bouts. Oginsky edged first year Alice Yee (Queens, N.Y.), 5-4, and cruised past senior Victoria Klapkova (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 5-2 in her final bout.
Wheaton returns to the strip on Saturday, February 1 when it travels to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the Northwestern Duals at host Northwestern University, while Hunter hosts City College of New York on December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
