Vaughan Goes 14-4 in Six Matches to Lead Women's Fencing at Drew Invitational

MADISON, N.J. – First year Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) posted a 14-4 record in the foil over six matches to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team at the Drew Invitational hosted by Drew University at the Simon Forum in Madison, N.J.

For the Lyons, it was their first six dual matches in school history.

Wheaton fell to Lafayette College, 25-2, Cornell University 26-1, Haverford College 21-3, Long Island University Brooklyn 25-2, Drew 24-3 and Stevens Institute of Technology 24-3.

Vaughan was 2-1 in the foil against Lafayette with a 5-2 win over first year Zoe Lenz (Hoboken, N.J.) and a 5-0 victory over senior Anna Silver (East Norwich, N.Y.). Her only defeat came at the hands of first year Nina Qiu (Shenzhen, China), 5-2.

The Lyon rookie took one of three bouts against Cornell University, including a 5-2 decision over sophomore Natalie Yeung (Los Angeles, Calif.). She fell to sophomore Brianna Lee (Cupertino, Calif.), 5-3, and to first year Rachel Li (Belmont, Mass.), 5-1.

Vaughan was undefeated in the foil vs. Haverford. She blanked both junior Emely Polanco (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Sophie Stamicar (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 5-0. The Wheaton first year also took down junior Paige Copenhaver (Pittsburgh, Pa.), 5-2.

The Art major was 2-1 against LIU with a 5-2 win over Daniela Perez Leal and a 5-3 triumph over Abigail Hunt. Vaughan was defeated by Anna Szantay, 5-3.

Vaughan won her last six bouts of the day, going 3-0 in the foil against both Drew and Stevens. She defeated Drew senior Assata Mutakabbir (Montclair, N.J.), 5-1, first year Filiz Erdogan (Kadikoy, Turkey), 5-3, and first year Tala Varoqua (Wayne, N.J.), 5-4. Vaughan surrendered just one point in three bouts vs. Stevens with 5-0 shutouts over senior Annabelle Crescenzo (Medford, N.J.) and sophomore Akemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.). She also defeated senior Sofia Savchuk, 5-1.

The Lyons return to action on November 23 in a Northeast Fencing Conference competition hosted by Brown University in Providence, R.I.
