PROVIDENCE, R.I. — First year Norah Vaughan (Hope Hull, Ala.) led the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's fencing team by going 11-4 against five different teams at a Northeast Fencing Conference meet at host Brown University's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons dropped five dual matches for the day to drop to 0-11 on the season.
Vaughan dominated the foil and began the day by winning all three bouts against Sacred Heart University, defeating senior Jenna Jacinto (Dix Hills, N.Y.), 5-4, before blanking first year Megan DePersis (Wyckoff, N.J.). She also claimed a win by forfeit. Wheaton first year Valerie Oginsky (Montgomery, N.J.) fell to junior Grace Baranosky (Fairfield, Conn.) in the epee, 5-3, before being edged by senior Brigid McMahon (Brick, N.J.), 5-4. She also fell to first year Gabby Phelan (Smithtown, N.Y.) by a count of 5-1. The Lyons fell in the dual match, 22-3.
Wheaton was defeated by Tufts University, 25-2. Vaughan took two of three bouts in the foil. She earned bookend wins with 5-4 decisions over first years Saanvi Kapoor (West Chester, N.Y.) and Sophie Guan (Irvine, Calif.). Her only loss came at the hands of graduate student Lea Levi (Istanbul, Turkey), 5-2. Oginsky was defeated by junior Karen Bei (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Mikayla Joseph (Woodmere, N.Y.) by a score of 5-1 in each bout. She was also downed by senior Olivia Tomasello (Henryville, Pa.).
Wagner College defeated the Lyons, 19-2. Vaughan claimed both points for Wheaton with a pair of foil wins. She took down sophomore Redmond Sullivan (Madison, Conn.), 5-3, before edging senior Alex Cole (Waterford, Conn.). Oginsky was nipped in the epee by junior Sofia Lopez Meneses (Leon, Mexico), 4-3. She was defeated by both sophomore Alanna Clayton (Union, N.J.) and senior Katerina Cervenkova (Prague, Czech Republic) by a score of 5-0.
Vaughan notched two points for Wheaton against Wellesley College in a 25-2 dual match loss. She opened with a 5-1 loss to sophomore Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) in the foil before rebounding to win a pair of bouts. She shut out first year Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) and claimed a 5-3 victory over senior Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.). Oginsky fell to first year Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China), 5-2, in the epee. She was also defeated by senior Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.), 5-3, and first year Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.), 5-1.
The Lyons' rookie phenom continued posted a winning record in her fifth straight dual match, winning two of three foil bouts against Boston College to close out the day. She earned 5-3 wins over both senior Taylor Cho (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and sophomore Cameron Cho (Yorba Linda, Calif.). Her only defeat came in a slim 5-4 decision against sophomore Taylor Sartori (Rochester, N.Y.). Oginsky was edged in the epee by both junior Helen Cobert (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Lulu McCutchen (Houston, Texas), 5-4. She was downed by sophomore Cynthia Ming (Warren, N.J.).
Wheaton returns to Brown University tomorrow for the second day of the Northeast Fencing Conference meet.
