Artistic Swimming Edged by Texas Woman's, 67-66; Macdonald Shines for Lyons

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) artistic swimming team was edged by visiting Texas Woman's University, 67-66, this afternoon at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. 

The Lyons dip to 0-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 1-1.

The meet consisted of just technical routines and did not involve any figures competitions.

First year Olivia Macdonald (Toronto, Ontario) dominated the solo routines for Wheaton, scoring 260.1188 points to handily win the routine by more than 70 points. Sophomore Candela Fidalgo Garcia (Vigo, Spain) placed second for TWU with a score of 188.4500 and first year Maya Schwickert (Scottsdale, Ariz.) posted a total of 183.7688 to finish third.

Senior Makayla Crichton (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Schwickert placed first in the duet and were two-thirds of the winning trio to lead the Pioneers. Crichton and Schwickert combined to tally 167.8750 points to finish first in the duet routine for TWU. The pair joined Fidalgo Garcia to win the trio by more than 50 points with a score of 184.6188.

Wheaton finished second in the duet with Macdonald pairing with junior Hannah Halberg (New York, N.Y.) to score 146.5188 points. Sophomore Eva Fernández-Montenegro Serrano (Guadaljara, Spain) and first year Maria Fernández-Montenegro Serrano (Guadaljara, Spain) combined on a score of 107.5625 to finish third in the routine for Texas Woman's, while Wheaton first year Jo Basco (Painesville, Ohio) and Scout Lowrie (Franklin, N.J.) posted a tally of 66.0625 points for fourth place. First year Renée Goldfinger (Hoboken, N.J.) and sophomore Marina Greenwood (Davis, Calif.) rounded out the scoring with a fifth-place effort of 61.5750 points for the home team.

The Pioneers also placed second in the trio behind a score of 131.0750 earned by juniors Anaya Kashikar (Autin, Texas), Laura Klein Paredes (Sant Pol de Mar, Spain) and Haiden Long (Keller, Texas). Halberg teamed with Goldfinger and Greenwood to post a score of 41.9250 in the trio for the Lyons.

Sophomore Ada Monteys Vinardell (Barcelona, Spain), Kashikar, Klein Paredes, Long, Eva Fernández-Montenegro Serrano, Maria Fernández-Montenegro Serrano and sophomore Julia Bernardes (Westfield, N.J.) grouped to put together a winning score of 157.5375 points to win the team routine for the Pioneers. Wheaton's entry of Goldfinger, Greenwood, Halberg, Macdonald, Basco and Lowrie tallied a total of 141.4188 points to place second.

The Lyons return to the pool on Thursday February 15 for the four-day Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship hosted by University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, while TWU hosts The Ohio State University on February 10 at 3:30 p.m.
