SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team won a match in singles play in an 8-1 dual match loss at host Springfield College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Appleton Courts in Springfield, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Pride improve to 9-7 and 3-1.
Senior Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) pulled out a two-set triumph at the number one singles for Wheaton over Eric Nicander (Stockholm, Sweden). Anschuetz took the first set, 6-3, and followed with a 6-2 second set win to take the match.
The Pride began the match sweeping doubles play, as Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) and Tim Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) earned an 8-3 win versus Wheaton's number one duo of senior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass) and Anschuetz, while Springfield's number two squad of Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) and Mike Kendrick (Watervliet, N.Y.) defeated senior Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn) and sophomore Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) of the Lyons. The third doubles unit of Eric Nicander (Stockholm, Sweden) and Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, México) prevailed against Wheaton's junior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) and senior Gabriel Fellows (Middleton, R.I.) by 8-4 margins.
On court number two in singles, Na opened the match with a 7-5 first set win before bowing 6-2 in the second frame, Villanueva Abad pulled out the match with a 10-3 super tiebreaker in the third set.
In third singles, Bor and Mateuz Czajka (Linkoping, Sweden) went into a tiebreaker in the first set with Czajka edging Bor, 7-6. Bor earned the second set win 6-0 before falling short in the third set, 10-6.
Springfield's Taub and Kendrick swept singles matches at number five and six, 6-3, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively, over the Lyon's junior Ahad Javed (Irving, Texas) and senior Chris Register (Portland, Maine).
The Lyons return to play on Wednesday, April 12 when they host conference foe Clark University at the Clark Tennis Courts at 4:00 p.m., while Springfield hosts Babson College at 3:45 p.m. on the same day.
