Men's Tennis Falls to No. 23 Babson, 9-0

NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team fell to No. 23 Babson College, 9-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in league action, while the Beavers, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, win their 10th straight match to improve to 12-1 and a perfect 3-0.

Babson took a 3-0 lead in the dual match after sweeping doubles play. The senior duo of Maxwell Conlin (Alameda, Calif.) and Parker Law (White Bear Lake, Minn.) defeated the Wheaton senior pair of Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.), 8-1, at the number one spot. Seniors Jack MacDonald (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Jason Weisman (Claremont, Calif.) teamed to win at number two doubles for the Beavers over senior Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn.) and sophomore Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) by a count of 8-3. Babson junior Jose Gonzalez (Asheville, N.C.) combined with first year Martin Mejia (Cali, Colombia) for an 8-2 triumph at third doubles over senior Gabriel Fellows (Middletown, R.I.) and junior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.).

Na battled at number one singles for the Lyons, but fell to Conlin in straight sets. Conlin took the first set, 6-4, but Na took a 4-3 lead in the second frame before Conlin won the final three games to take the set and the match. MacDonald came away with a victory at third singles for the Beavers with a 6-0 first set win, before Hanlon took three games in a 6-3 defeat to MacDonald in the second set. 

Gonzalez dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 effort at fourth singles over the Lyons' Luyrink. Senior Jeff Hampton (Lakeway, Texas) cruised past Wheaton senior Chris Register (Portland, Maine) at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Weisman and Mejia were unblemished in singles play for the Beavers winning their respective singles matches without dropping a game. Weisman defeated Bor at second singles, 6-0,6-0, for Babson's fifth and deciding point, while Mejia took fifth singles over Fellows by the same score.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they head to Springfield, Mass. to take on league foe Springfield College at 12:00 p.m., while the Beavers return to action on the same day when they host NEWMAC rival United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
