Cahill Leads Men's Outdoor Track & Field at NEWMAC Championship; Lyons Place Sixth

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior Matthew Cahill (Brewster, Mass.) scored in three different events to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team on Day Two of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Sherie and Don (1961) Morrison Track at Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge, Mass.

The Lyons placed sixth overall at the NEWMAC Championship with 44 points, while host Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the league title with 296 points.

Cahill matched his personal-best with a height of 1.95 meters to place third in the high jump for Wheaton, while placing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-record mark of 58.75. Cahill also finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.18. 

Sophomores Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) and Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) each scored in multiple events for Wheaton as well. Peterson place sixth in the 200 meters with a personal-record time of 22.34 and was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.53 meters. Pinnix finished seventh with a personal-best mark of 12.37 meters in the triple jump and placed eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.21. 

Senior Anthony Almas (Marstons Mills, Mass.) posted a personal-record time of 22.26 to place fifth in the 200 meters, while first year Nick Lacroix (Bedford, N.H.) finished seventh with a personal-best mark of 10:04.55 in the 3000-meter steeplechase. 

Lacroix was one of five newcomers to score points for the Lyons. Nathan Plympton (East Greenwich, R.I.) finished eighth with a personal-best mark of 52.90 in the 400 meters and classmate Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) also scored for Wheaton with a time of 4:06.74 to place eighth in the 1500 meters. First year Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) placed sixth in the discus throw with a personal-record toss of 35.81 meters, while sophomore Joe Moses (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied points with an eight-place effort in the discus with a throw of 34.36 meters. Moses also finished 10th in the shot put with a mark of 11.10 meters.

Senior Matt Daley (Branford, Conn.) registered Wheaton's top showing in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.74 to finish 14th. 

The Lyons' 4X400 relay team turned in a season-best time of 3:33.93 to finish sixth behind Daley, Almas, senior Graeme Wojtowicz (Hyannis, Mass.) and sophomore Zac Elmasri (Groton, Mass.).

Wheaton will compete again on Friday, May 5 on the first day of the two-day NCAA Division III New England Championship at host Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
