Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team was defeated by host Babson College, 25-8, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at MacDowell Field in Babson Park, Mass.
The Lyons conclude their season with an overall record of 6-10, including 0-6 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers improve to 9-4 and a perfect 5-0.
Babson controlled the match with a 59-25 shot advantage and won 25 of 35 faceoffs to go with a 52-29 ground ball margin.
Sophomores Charlie Racine (Oradell, N.J.), Mike McLaughlin (Stoughton, Mass.), Jack Board (Westborough, Mass.) and senior Shane Ross (Hanson, Mass.) each tallied a pair of goals for Wheaton. Racine also added 10 ground balls and a caused turnover, while McLaughlin picked up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Junior defender Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Sophomore goalie John Drew (North Andover, Mass.) made 14 saves for the Lyons.
The Beavers finished with a season-high 25 goals and 13 different players found the back of the net. Graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) tallied two goals and three assists, junior Christian Brofft (Pottstown, Pa.) added two goals and an assist, senior Nick Solomon (Glencoe, Ill.) chipped in with two goals and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) produced a goal and three assists. Junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 19-of-24 faceoffs and scooped up a career-high 16 ground balls. Senior goalie Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif) made nine saves in the first three quarters and three reserve goalies combined to make four saves in the fourth stanza.
Board traded goals with senior midfielder Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) to have the score tied at 1-1 with 13:19 to play in the opening quarter. Babson scored the next two markers, including a marker from senior Wills Jordan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) to give the home team a 3-1 lead. Racine found the back of the net with 7:32 to go in the quarter to pull the Lyons to within 3-2.
Babson led 3-2 midway through the first quarter before Kenney, Price and Brofft scored for the Beavers in the final four minutes of the frame to extend the lead to 6-2. Board cut the margin to three goals to start the second quarter for Wheaton, but Babson took over, connecting on 10 goals in less than 10 minutes before Ross scored for the Lyons to close out the half. Martin and Brofft started the rally, Price had three goals and an assist in the streak, including a man-up goal, while Spangenberg had two goals and two assists, Kenney scored twice and Feeks added one.
After Kenney and Ross traded goals in the first four minutes of the second half, Babson held Wheaton off the scoreboard the rest of the quarter while Smith, Neill and Kenney tallied goals in a two-minute span and Solomon went back-to-back to close out the frame with the hosts up 22-5.
McLaughlin and Racine scored within 12 seconds of each other for the first two markers of the fourth period. McLaughlin scored again, this time 63 seconds after Racine to pull the Lyons to within 22-8.
Babson wraps up the regular season next Saturday 1:00 p.m. at MacDowell Field in a showdown with defending champion MIT, with the top seed in the conference tournament on the line.
