SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Matthew Cahill (Brewster, Mass.) and sophomore Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) both posted qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III New England Championship with their respective efforts to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.
Pinnix placed seventh with a time of 15.56 in the 110-meter hurdles, while Cahill was a step behind at 15.62 and also qualified for the New England Championship in the event. In addition, Cahill registered a personal-record time in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:01.94 to place 11th.
The Lyons finished sixth in the 4X100 relay with a season-best time of 43.00 with the combination of seniors Justin Hart (Queens, N.Y.) and Anthony Almas (Marstons Mills, Mass.), first year Ricardo Goncalves (Revere, Mass.) and sophomore Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine).
Peterson also placed 14th with a personal-record time of 53.09 in the 400 meters, while senior Graeme Wojtowicz (Hyannis, Mass.), sophomore William Singer (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Matthew Lambert (Hampton, N.H.) all recorded personal-best times. Wojtowicz recorded a time of 23.97 in the 200 meters and Singer came in at 24.79 in the event. Lambert posted a mark of 16:38.34 in the 5000 meters.
First year Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) clocked in at 15:34.46 to place 10th for Wheaton in the 5000 meters.
Sophomore Joe Moses (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Lyons in the throws with a 17th-place finish in the discus throw behind a 37.14 meter effort. He placed 19th in the javelin throw with a distance of 44.57 meters. Senior Kyle Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.) finished 19th in the hammer throw with a mark of 40.19 meters.
The Lyons return to action Saturday, April 8 when they travel to Amherst, Mass. to compete in the Spring Fling Invitational at Amherst College at 10:00 a.m.
