Men's Track & Field Competes at Coffey Invitational and Gravel Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass./WESTFIELD, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track and field team posted four NCAA Division III New England Championship qualifying marks, while competing at the 2023 Carla Coffey Invitational and the Jerry Gravel Classic today. Smith College hosted the Coffey Invitational in Northampton, Mass., while Westfield State University hosted the Gravel Classic in Westfield, Mass.

Sophomore Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) posted a personal-best leap of 6.80 meters to qualify for the New England Championship and place second in the long jump at the Coffey Invitational for the Lyons, while classmate Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) also turned in a personal-record effort with a time of 15.33 to win the 110-meter hurdles. First year Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) also posted a personal-best time of 4:02.66 to finish seventh in the 1500 meters and qualify for New Englands. Senior Matthew Cahill (Brewster Mass.) recorded another qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.27.

Junior Matthew Lambert (Hampton, N.H.) just missed qualifying for New Englands with a 10th-place personal-best time of 10:11.99 in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Peterson also added a fifth-place effort in the 100 meters with a mark of 11.21, while Cahill posted a personal-best mark of 59.46 in the 400-meter hurdles.

The 4X100 relay team of seniors Justin Hart (Queens, N.Y), Anthony Almas (Marstons Mills, Mass.), first year Ricardo Goncalves (Revere, Mass.) and Peterson combined on a season-best time of 42.71 to win the race for Wheaton. The 4X400 relay placed third behind senior Graeme Wojtowicz (Hyannis, Mass.) and first years Dante Marciano (Bristol, Conn.), Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.) and GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) with a time of 3:44.12.

Senior Anthony Almas (Marstons Mills, Mass.) recorded a fifth-place result in the 200 meters with a mark of 22.94 and classmate Justin Hart (Queens, N.Y.) was eighth in the 100 meters with a personal-record time of 11.53. 

Senior Kyle Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.) placed sixth in both the discus throw and the hammer throw for the Lyons at the Gravel Classic with marks of 35.67 meters and 42.14 meters, respectively. Sophomore Joe Moses (Cincinnati, Ohio) was fifth in the discus with a throw of 36.44 meters and seventh in both the hammer throw at 39.48 meters and the javelin throw with a toss of 27.72 meters.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 22 when they travel to Hartford, Conn. to compete in the Trinity Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
