Men's Tennis Blanks UMass Boston, 9-0, in Season Finale

NORTON, Mass. – All six players recorded a pair of wins for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team in a 9-0 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston this afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons conclude their season with a 5-10 record, while the Beacons fall to 1-6. UMB returns to the courts on April 15 in Little East Conference play, hosting Rhode Island College at 12:00 p.m.

Wheaton collectively dropped just one game in doubles play to gain a sweep on all three courts to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles action. The Lyons were nearly as dominant in singles play with four Wheaton wins coming while surrendering one or fewer games in each contest.

Seniors Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Chris Register (Portland, Maine) combined for an 8-0 triumph for the Lyons over junior Patrick Ramos (American Canyon, Calif.) and sophomore Felix Nguyen (Worcester, Mass.). Wheaton's other senior duo of Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn.) and Gabriel Fellows (Middletown, R.I.) won at number three doubles without dropping a game in an 8-0 decision over Grady Friedman (Kennebunk, Maine) and Karsten Bourgoine (Fairfield, Maine). Junior Eli Hanlon (North Branford, Conn.) combined with senior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) to secure an 8-1 result over UMass Boston first year Abdullah Dill (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and sophomore Melvin Nina (Boston, Mass.).

Na was the first one off the court after cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second singles over Dill, before Register won the deciding fifth point of the dual match for the Lyons with a 6-1, 6-0 showing at fifth singles over Bourgoine. Luyrink and Fellows followed Register's lead for Wheaton, giving up just one game in each of their respective singles wins. Luyrink took number four over Nguyen, 6-0, 6-1, while Fellows dominated in a 6-0, 6-1 effort over Friedman at sixth singles.

Anschuetz battled to a 7-5 first set win over Ramos, before settling into a rhythm that resulted in a 6-0 showing in the second set for the Lyons' eighth point of the match. Hanlon was on the wrong side of a 6-3 first set score at number three singles against Nina, before getting back on track and taking the middle set by a matching count of 6-3. The junior won the super-tiebreaker in the third frame, 10-6, to win the match and complete a 9-0 win for the home team.
