NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team won a match in both singles and doubles play in a 7-2 dual match loss at host United States Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Gregory Field House in New London, Conn.
The Lyons fall to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Bears improve to 3-5 and 2-1.
Junior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) combined with senior Gabriel Fellows (Middletown, R.I.) for an 8-6 win at number three doubles over the Coast Guard duo of senior James Vuille-Kowing (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and first year Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.).
Senior Chris Register (Portland, Maine) pulled out a three-set triumph at sixth singles for Wheaton over Love. Love took the first set, 7-5, before Register answered with a decisive 6-3 middle set win and a 10-4 result in the third set super-tiebreaker.
The Bears won the first two doubles matches of the day with Myles Decoste pairing with Charles Norman for an 8-1 win at number one over the senior Lyon combo of Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.). Coast Guard's number two doubles tandem also recorded an 8-1 win behind senior Banks Evans (Clayton, N.C.) and sophomore Paul Choi (Wheaton, Ill.) over Wheaton senior Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn.) and sophomore Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.).
Decoste bested Anschuetz at first singles as well, with a 6-2, 6-1 showing, while Evans earned a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Bears over Na at number two singles.
Norman won at number three singles for Coast Guard over Bor, 6-1, 6-0, while Choi also dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth singles over Hanlon. Vuille-Kowing posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at number five singles for the Bears over Luyrink.
The Lyons return to play on Tuesday, April 4 when they host conference foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Clark Tennis Courts at 4:00 p.m., while Coast Guard hosts Emerson College at 3:30 p.m. on April 5.
