Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – First year attackman Charlie Krause (Charlestown, R.I.) tallied a career-high five points, including three goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over host Massachusetts Maritime Academy this evening at Clean Harbors Stadium in Buzzards Bay, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 5-5 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 3-3.
Wheaton erased a 6-4 deficit and tallied seven of the final 10 goals to earn the victory. Despite being outshot, 52-34, sophomore goalie John Drew (North Andover, Mass.) was up to the task for the Lyons, making 14 saves to contribute to the victory.
Krause added a ground ball and a caused turnover to his night for Wheaton, while sophomore midfielder Charlie Racine (Oradell, N.J.) scored three goals, added an assist and picked up five ground balls. Sophomore middie Mike McLaughlin (Stoughton, Mass.) also found the back of the net three times and caused a turnover. Senior midfielder Shane Ross (Hanson, Mass.) was the fourth Lyon with multiple scores, hitting paydirt twice to go with a pair of ground balls. Junior defender Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) registered a game-high four caused turnovers and added three ground balls.
Senior attackman Mitchell Maida (Burlington, Mass.) led Mass. Maritime with four goals and an assist in addition to a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore midfielder Braeden Kosiewicz (Madison, Conn.) netted a pair of goals and added an assist and two ground balls. First year defender Patrick Doyle (Weymouth, Mass.) led the Buccaneers' defensive effort with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore goalie Dean Fey (Mountain Top, Pa.) stopped four shots in net for the home team.
Kosiewicz scored with 9:52 left in the third quarter to give Mass. Maritime a 6-4 lead. Wheaton scored four unanswered goals in a span of just over six minutes to take an 8-6 margin before the final period of play. Krause scored a pair of markers, including a goal with just 76 seconds to go before the fourth quarter to give the Lyons a two-goal lead.
Junior attackman Gage Coolahan (Abingdon, Md.) found Maida with a goal at the 11:03 mark of the fourth period to pull the Buccaneers to within 8-7. The teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter, beginning with McLaughlin matching Maida at 9:02, only to have Maida respond with a man-up marker with 5:18 remaining to cut the deficit to 9-8. Racine scored with 2:24 to play, before first year middie Cooper Barrett (Somers, Conn.) netted a goal for Mass. Maritime with 76 seconds left in the contest to keep it a one-goal game in favor of Wheaton. McLaughlin gave the Lyons some insurance with a marker coming with just 25 ticks left in the game to make it 11-9.
First year Daniel Kane (Marshfield, Mass.) opened the scoring with the first goal of the night for the Buccaneers at 12:52 of the opening quarter. McLaughlin answered just over two minutes later and Krause scored on a feed from Racine to open the second quarter scoring at 10:14 and give Wheaton a 2-1 lead. Mass. Maritime scored the next three goals from three different players, including a marker from Kosiewicz to give the Buccaneers a 4-2 margin with 7:05 showing on the second quarter clock. Racine and Ross tallied the final two goals of the half to knot the score at 4-4 before the intermission.
Mass. Maritime scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 1 when they host New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe United States Coast Guard Academy on Nordin Field at 4:00 p.m., while the Buccaneers host University of Southern Maine on March 31 at 7:00 p.m.
