Board, Sullivan Lead Men's Lacrosse over Gordon, 17-7

NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Jack Board (Westborough, Mass.) tallied a career-high seven points, including three goals and senior attackman Robert Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) added a career-high five goals to go with an assist to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team to a 17-7 victory over visiting Gordon College this evening with a snow-filled sky above Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. 

The Lyons improve to 3-0 on the season and hold their opponent to exactly seven goals for the third straight game to mark the first time since 1991 that they have held their first three foes to seven or fewer goals to start the season. The Fighting Scots dip to 0-1 in their season opener. 

Wheaton owned a 46-40 shot advantage, but was 5-11 in man-up opportunities to take advantage of nine Gordon penalties that resulted in eight minutes in the box.

Board added a ground ball to his night for the Lyons, while Sullivan picked up a pair of ground balls and caused a turnover. Sophomore attackman Ethan Powers (Braintree, Mass.) recorded a career-best four points on three goals and an assist in addition to a game-high five ground balls. Senior midfielder Shane Ross (Hanson, Mass.) contributed with two goals, an assist, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore midfielder Charlie Racine (Oradell, N.J.) chipped in on both sides of the field with a goal and a pair of assists to go with five ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers.

Junior midfielder John Flemmi (Braintree, Mass.), sophomore midfielder Nicolas Flemmi (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore middie Liam Davey (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each netted a pair of goals to lead the Fighting Scots' offense. John Flemmi added two ground balls and a caused turnover, while his younger sibling picked up five ground balls. First year midfielder Aidan Walsh (Scituate, Mass.) won 15 of 25 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls.

Wheaton scored seven of the game's first eight goals, including the first three of the night, to take a 7-1 lead with 8:38 to play in the second quarter. Sullivan scored three times in the first 23 minutes of play, including a pair of advantage markers to spark the Lyons. 

John Flemmi scored with 3:19 left in the opening quarter and tallied his second goal with 1:22 showing on the second quarter clock for Gordon, before Board found the back of the net with 57 seconds remaining in the half for an 8-2 Wheaton lead.

Sophomore midfielder Mike McLaughlin (Stoughton, Mass.) and Board scored the first two goals of the third quarter for the Lyons, but Davey scored for the visitors followed by the first collegiate goal from first year attackman Jackson Wright (Cazenovia, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 10-4 for the Fighting Scots with 7:55 to go in the quarter.

Powers and Board scored for Wheaton within a span of 48 seconds, before Davey tallied the last goal of the quarter for Gordon to make it 12-5 in favor of the home team after three quarters of play. 

The Lyons scored a trio of markers to open the final quarter and take their largest cushion of the evening at 15-5 with 9:02 remaining in the contest. Ross, Powers and Sullivan all scored for Wheaton.

Nicolas Flemmi netted both of his goals over the final eight-plus minutes for the Fighting Scots, bookending Lyon goals from Sullivan and the first collegiate score from first year attackman Hunter Pelletier (Gorham, Maine).

Sophomore goalie John Drew (North Andover, Mass.) stopped eight of 14 shots in 57:19 of play for Wheaton, before yielding to first year netminder Nicholas Foster (Averill Park, N.Y.) for 2:41 in his collegiate debut. He turned away two of three shots for the Lyons. Colin Liscomb made nine saves for Gordon.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. Wheaton hosts Curry College on Nordin Field, while the Fighting Scots host Eastern Connecticut State University.
