NORTON, Mass. -- Senior Matthew Cahill (Brewster, Mass.) and sophomore Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) each turned in a pair of NCAA Division III New England Championship qualifying efforts this afternoon at the Pre-Post Season Invitational to lead the Wheaton College men's track & field team at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
Cahill matched his personal-best height in the high jump with a mark of 1.90 meters to win the event and posted a time of 8.64 in the 60-meter hurdles to place second, while Peterson won both the long jump and the 200 meters with qualifying marks of 6.62 meters and 22.77 seconds, respectively.
Sophomore Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) recorded a personal-record time of 8.44 to qualify for New Englands and win the 60-meter hurdles and sophomore John Dowgiert (Methuen, Mass.) finished first in the 400 meters with a qualifying mark of 51.09. Senior Matt Daley (Branford, Conn.) qualified in the same event and placed second with a time of 51.39.
First year Ricardo Goncalves (Revere, Mass.) recorded a personal-record time of 9.04 to place fifth in the 60-meter hurdles and finished sixth in the 200 meters with a personal-best mark of 24.03. Sophomore William Singer (Los Angeles, Calif.) also registered a personal-record mark in the 200 meters at 24.86. First year Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.) recorded a personal-best time of 25.83 in the event and classmate Dante Marciano (Bristol, Conn.) made his collegiate debut in the race with a time of 25.83. First year Lucas MacKenzie (Saint Albans, Vt.) also posted a personal-record effort with a time of 3:06.41 in the 1000 meters.
Sophomore Noah White (Winchester, Mass.) topped the field in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:59.71, while first year Nick Lacroix (Bedford, N.H.) was sixth at 9:25.00 and junior Matthew Lambert (Hampton, N.H.) was seventh with a time of 9:25.14 to stand as personal-best marks for both Lacroix and Lambert.
Sophomore Zac Elmasri (Groton, Mass.) and senior Anthony Almas (Marstons Mills, Mass.) were both strong in the 400 meters with a time of 52.22 and 52.75 to place fourth and fifth, respectively, while Justin Hart (Queens, N.Y.) finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.55 and fourth in the 60 meters with a mark of 7.25.
Sophomore Joe Moses (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the throwers, recording a toss of 13.40 meters in the weight throw to place fifth and a heave of 12.06 meters to finish sixth in the shot put.
The Lyons will be in action again when they compete at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. for the NCAA New England Division III Indoor Championship on February 24-25.
