Box Score BIDDEFORD, MAINE -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the final 12-plus minutes of play to earn an 11-7 victory over host University of New England this afternoon on Blue Bolt Field in Biddeford, Maine.
The Lyons improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Nor'Easters fall to 0-1 in their season opener.
Despite UNE winning 14 of 21 faceoffs, Wheaton still outshot its host, 23-18.
Sophomore midfielder Charlie Racine (Oradell, N.J.) tallied a career-high four goals and picked up seven ground balls to lead the Lyons to go with a caused turnover. Senior attackman Robert Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) netted three goals and picked up four ground balls, while senior middie Shane Ross (Hanson, Mass.) netted a pair of goals with both coming in the final nine minutes of play and added three ground balls and a caused turnover. First year attacker Charlie Krause (Charlestown, R.I.) recorded three points, including a pair of goals in addition to a pair of ground balls. Junior defender Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) scooped up three ground balls and came up with a game-high four caused turnovers.
Senior midfielder Colin Watt (Somers, Conn.) and junior attacker Andrew Lawrence (North Yarmouth, Maine) each tallied three points with two goals and an assist apiece to lead the Nor'Easters. Junior midfielder Jordan White (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) also scored a pair of goals and added two ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Ben Gowell (Plymouth, Mass.) won 14 of 21 faceoffs and came up with a game-high 10 ground balls, while first year midfielder Shea Fogarty (Melrose, Mass.) was credited with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Senior midfielder Ryan Hazard (Milford, Mass.) opened the fourth quarter scoring with a goal for UNE to pull the home team even at 7-7 with 13:43 to play in the game.
Racine and Ross each scored in the next four and a half minutes to give Wheaton a 9-7 lead before Sullivan scored to give the Lyons a three-goal margin with 4:48 to go in the contest. Ross added another insurance marker with his second tally of the quarter coming with 2:49 left in the game.
The Nor'Easters scored three of the first four goals of the game, including two from Lawrence to take a 3-1 lead at the 12:21 mark of the second quarter. Racine countered with a pair of scores to pull the Lyons even at 3-3 with 8:47 showing on the second quarter clock.
White put UNE back on top with a marker coming with just 1:48 to before the half, but Sullivan found the back of the net with 46 ticks left to knot the score at 4-4.
Sullivan wasted no time in giving Wheaton a 5-4 edge with his second tally coming just seven seconds into the third quarter. The Nor'Easters received back-to-back goals from Watt and White in a span of two and a half minutes to take a 6-5 lead with 9:35 showing in the period, but it was the last lead they owned. Despite being down a player, Racine still managed to score for the visitors to erase the deficit and make it 6-6 just 28 seconds after UNE took the lead. Krause gave the Lyons a one-goal margin at 4:53 of the period before Wheaton's dominant fourth quarter.
Sophomore goalie John Drew (North Andover, Mass.) stopped seven of 20 shots to record 13 saves for the Lyons, while sophomore goalie Evan Hazard (Milford, Mass.) turned away 14 shots for the Nor'Easters.
Wheaton returns to action when it hosts Gordon College in its home opener on Wednesday, February 22 on Nordin Field at 7:00 p.m., while UNE heads to Standish, Maine to take on Saint Joseph's College on February 21 at 4:00 p.m.
