Peterson Leads Men's Track & Field at Wheaton Invitational

NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) won the 60 meters with a NCAA Division III New England Championship qualifying time and placed second in the long jump to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team today at the Wheaton Invitational at Beard Field House in on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute won the meet with a tally of 221 points, while University of Massachusetts Dartmouth finished second with 120.50 points. The Lyons placed third with 76 points and Colby-Sawyer College was fourth with 36.50 points.

Peterson turned in a personal-best time of 7.11 to place first in the 60 meters in addition to taking runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.36 meters for Wheaton. Senior Matthew Cahill (Brewster, Mass.) also qualified for the New England Championship meet with a mark of 8.68 to place third in the 60-meter hurdles. He also scored in the high jump with a fifth-place height of 1.80 meters.

The Lyons won the 4X200 relay behind Cahill, first years Ricardo Goncalves (Revere, Mass.), GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) and a blazing come-from-behind final 50 meters from Peterson to close out a time of 1:34.13.

Senior Matt Daley (Branford, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 400 meters for Wheaton with a time of 53.09, while first year Nathan Plympton (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored with a sixth-place finish at 54.33. Senior Justin Hart (Queens, N.Y.) posted a time of 7.29 to place fourth in the 60 meters and senior Graeme Wojtowicz (Hyannis, Mass.) placed sixth in the 200 meters with a mark of 24.40. 

First year Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) finished sixth in a strong 3000 meters field with a time of 8:50.79 for the Lyons, while senior Anthony Gatti (Scarborough, Maine) placed sixth in the mile with a mark of 5:15.21.

Wheaton sophomore Ryan Ventura (South Easton, Mass.) scored with a sixth-place effort in the long jump with a leap of 5.59 meters.

Sophomore Joe Moses (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Lyon throwers with a pair of third-place showings. He recorded a hurl of 13.49 meters in the weight throw and a heave of 11.94 meters in the shot put. Senior Kyle Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.) was fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 12.68 meters and first year Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) was fifth in the event with a throw of 10.75 meters.

Wheaton returns to action when it competes at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Indoor Championship at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. on Thursday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m.
