Men's Tennis Falls to Coast Guard, 5-0, in NEWMAC Semifinals

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The fourth-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was defeated by top-seeded United States Coast Guard Academy, 5-0, this morning in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Semifinals at the Upper Roland Tennis Courts in New London, Conn. on the Coast Guard campus.

The Lyons finish their season with a 6-11 overall record. The Bears win their school-record ninth in a row to improve to 13-2 and advance to play for the NEWMAC Championship tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in New London against second-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a 5-2 winner over number three seed Babson College. 

Coast Guard swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 dual match lead before earning wins in the first two completed singles matches to earn the match victory.

Wheaton senior Ian Tracy (San Jose, Costa Rica) paired with junior Josh Anshuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) at number one doubles in an 8-4 loss to the Bears' sophomore duo of Myles Decoste (Stuart, Fla.) and Sean Dreher (Harker Heights, Texas). Junior Ethan Na (Weatogue, Conn.) and sophomore Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) suffered an 8-3 defeat at third doubles to Coast Guard junior Banks Evans (Clayton, N.C.) and first year Paul Choi (Wheaton, Ill.). The Bears also won at number two doubles with an 8-0 triumph from the combo of senior Lucas Arora (Cornwall, N.Y.) and sophomore Charles Norman (Aurora, Ohio) over the Lyons pairing of senior Albert Ortega Campos (Malaga, Spain) and junior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.).

Decoste clinched the winning point for Coast Guard after winning the first set at number one singles, 6-0, over Tracy. Tracy battled back in the second set for the Lyons, but Decoste pulled out the set and the match with a 6-4 showing. Norman gave the Bears a 4-0 margin with a 6-0, 6-1 effort at number three singles over Ortega Campos.
