Men's Tennis Defeated at MIT, 9-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was shut out by host Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 9-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at duPont Courts in Cambridge, Mass. The Lyons fall to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Engineers improve to 5-3 and 1-0.

Senior Ian Tracy (San Jose, Costa Rica) led Wheaton by winning six games at number one singles in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to junior Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.). Tracy combined with junior Josh Anshuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) at first doubles for the Lyons, but fell 8-3 to junior Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) and first year Carl-Herman Grant (Oslo, Norway). Anshuetz was defeated at number two singles in his return from injury, losing the first set, 6-3, and the second, 6-1, to first year Daniel Antov (Autin, Texas).

First year Karl von Weissenbeck (Winchester, Mass.) was defeated for Wheaton at fifth singles by first year Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.), 6-0, 6-2, while Lyons junior Ethan Na (Weatogue, Conn.) fell at fourth singles to MIT sophomore Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.), 6-1, 6-0.

Papacica and sophomore Daniel Sharygin (Newburgh, Ind.) were both 6-0, 6-0 winners for the Engineers at third and sixth singles, respectively over Wheaton senior Albert Ortega Campos (Malaga, Spain) and junior Chris Register (Portland, Maine).

Na teamed with sophomore Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) at third doubles in an 8-2 loss to MIT sophomore Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and first year Wayne Nelms (Baltimore, Md.). Ortega Campos combined with junior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) for the Lyons at second doubles and were downed by Shen and Antov, 8-0.

Wheaton returns to the court on Wednesday, April 6 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Emerson College at 4:00 p.m. on the Clark Tennis Courts, while the Engineers head to New London, Conn. on the same day to face United States Coast Guard Academy at 3:00 p.m.
