Men's Tennis Downed by Connecticut College, 7-2

NORTON, Mass. --  The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was defeated by visiting Connecticut College, 7-2, today at Beard Field House on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Camels improve to 5-2.

Conn. College won two of three doubles matches, before coming away with five wins in singles action. 

First year Karl von Weissenbeck (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) registered a victory at number three doubles to put the Lyons on the board. They put together an 8-2 effort over the Camels' pair of first year Walker Mulligan (Guildford, Conn.) and senior Evan Aoki-Goldsmith (Pennington, N.J.). 

Senior Ian Tracy (San Jose, Costa Rica) picked up a point in singles play for Wheaton with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over senior Henry De Coster (Greenwich, Conn.).

Senior Julian Tien (Barrington, R.I.) was a double-winner to lead the Camels. Tien teamed with classmate Sean Jenkins (Davidson, N.C.) at number one doubles to earn an 8-1 victory over the Wheaton duo of Tracy and senior Albert Ortega Campos (Malaga, Spain). Tien won at second singles over Ortega Campos in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.

Sophomore David Poudrier (Fairfield, Conn.) was also a double-winner for the Camels, combining with first year Krishh Tipnis (Thane, India) for an 8-6 triumph at number two doubles over junior Ethan Na (Weatogue, Conn.) and sophomore Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) for the Lyons. Poudrier dropped the first set, 6-2, at number three singles to Na, but battled back for a 7-5 second set win, before taking the third set in a tie-breaker, 9-7.

First year Jules Taylor-Kerman (New York, N.Y.) won in straight sets over von Weissenbeck at fourth singles and Conn. College first year James Serhant III (Hadley, Mass.) defeated Lyons' first year Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.), 6-3, 6-1 at number five. 

Junior Aaron Fleishman (Brookline, Mass.) closed out the match at sixth singles with an 8-3 win in pro-set format over Luyrink. 

 

The Lyons return to action on Sunday, March 27 when they host Colby-Sawyer College on the Clark Tennis Courts at 12:00 p.m., while Connecticut College heads to Amherst, Mass. on March 26 to play Amherst College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference season opener.
