NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was defeated by visiting Assumption University, 8-1, this afternoon on the Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 1-1, while the Greyhounds improve to 3-1 on the season.
Assumption swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead in the dual match heading into singles action.
Sophomore Adrian Toderascu (Chisinau, Moldova) teamed with classmate Jose Silas (Lima, Peru) at number one doubles for the Greyhounds and picked up an 8-3 win over the Wheaton duo of senior Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and classmate Albert Ortega Campos (Marbella, Spain). Senior Brady Ryan (Lynn, Mass.) and junior Alan Nguyen (Reading, Mass.) also turned in an 8-3 decision at second doubles for Assumption, taking down the Lyon pairing of senior Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn.) and junior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.). Graduate student Michael Butkus (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Lucas Caira (Medfield, Mass.) combined for an 8-6 triumph at number three doubles over Wheaton senior Chris Register (Portland, Maine) and sophomore Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.).
The top five singles spots all continued the winning trend from doubles play for the Greyhounds with five straight set wins.
Wheaton's lone point came at sixth singles, where Register also won in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-2 effort over Caira. The win was his second straight in dual match play.
Toderascu defeated Anschuetz at number one, 6-4, 6-0, while Silas was the winner for the visitors at second singles over Na for the Lyons, 7-5, 6-3.
Nguyen took third singles for Assumption, 6-1, 6-3, over Ortega Campos and Ryan had little trouble at fourth singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bor. Butkus gained a 6-2, 7-5 win at number five singles over Hanlon.
The Lyons return to the courts on Saturday, October 15 when they head to nearby Easton, Mass. to take on Stonehill College at 1:00 p.m., while Assumption travels to Wenham, Mass. to play Gordon College on October 13 at 3:30 p.m.
