Box Score New London, Conn.- May 1, 2021- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team fell to United States Coast Guard Academy, 20-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinal play on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field in New London, Connecticut.
The Lyons were led by senior midfielder Gil Bach (Sandwich, Mass.) who posted one shot and one assist. Juniors Lou Mainella (Falmouth, Maine) and Ben Stomberg (Glastonbury, Conn.) as well as first year Oliver La Du (Darien, Conn.) each netted one a piece in today's match. Senior midfielder Troy Sliney (Bradford, Mass.) was able to collect seven ground balls and went 10-23 in face-offs for the Lyons.
Senior goalie Neal Canastra (Dartmouth, Mass.) played the full 60 minutes in today's match making 26 saves after seeing 46 shots.
The game was a battle from the start. The Coast Guard Academy Bears opened up the scoring with three goals early. The Lyons responded at 7:58 in the first quarter with a goal from Mainella to cut the lead to two. The Bears responded with two more before Stomberg jammed one in the back of the net with 2:47 left in the quarter. Coast Guard Academy would eventually push its advantage with not letting the Lyons get a goal in the second or third quarter but Wheaton would not go away quietly when La Du found the back of the net with six seconds left in the match.
